Comment Europe is wetter (Score 1) 117

Summary says that Europe was 7% wetter, however it's not "Europe" but rather "parts of Europe", which leads to some areas living through droughts and others through floods. So although Europe was on average wetter, for southern France it's never been dryer up to the point that we're running out of water during the summer months because it's not raining and we're no longer getting any snow during winter (I live in the alps at 1000m and had at most 15cm, maybe 20cm of snow total at my altitude during last winter).

Comment They're not helping anything... (Score 1) 66

The bitcoin farmers are just using excess (presumably cheap) energy to power their farms. How is this electrifying anything? They're not the ones generating power, they are just parking themselves near producers and sucking up the excess, that's not going to magically power remote villages or anything. This is non-story, I wouldn't even call this greenwashing...

Comment Re:You don't say!! (Score 1) 199

I always wondered... it has capacity for 9 million people to live there. Alright, where would these 9 million people come from, they can't all be tourists? Refugees? Lol, no. People leaving their homes in Saudi to move to this thing? So would the departure cities all be returned to the desert or what? What's the plan there? This project never made any sense.

Comment No fly zone? (Score 1) 202

So Tennessee will become a no-fly zone from now on? That's going to make traveling a challenge... Also, I would not have thought that their electrical public transit system would be solid enough to welcome the sudden influx of passengers seeing as it will no longer be possible to drive gas powered cars in that state either.

Comment Re:The whole point of having two pilots... (Score 3, Informative) 157

They just instituted rules prohibiting a pilot from being alone in the cockpit while the 2nd one was using the bathroom because of that one guy who decided to commit suicide by ramming the full plane into the side of a mountain (after having locked himself in the cockpit while his colleague was peeing).

Comment Re:What kind of "give away" (Score 1) 206

Does it really matter if someone somehow manages to increase his wealth by doing a lot of good for the World? The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is making a huge positive impact, can't we be happy about that? If Bezos can save taxes by spending billions on curing cancer, or green energy, or feeding the poor, who gives a shit?

Comment Re:Millions created, probably very few sold (Score 2) 22

The article says that 2.5million of the 3 million accounts created were used to purchase avatars and these avatars are now sold out.

I'd be willing to bet that most of those purchases were done by people who have no idea what an NFT is or that it can (technically) be resold to someone else; these were bought by people who wanted to buy a "cool avatar" to be different. Until folks start successfully selling these things again to others, it's not a win for the NFT pushers.

Comment Re: omnipresent ads (Score 1) 56

uBlock Origin is the one you want, at least that's the only thing that I use to clean up my browsing experience and it takes care of YouTube ads handily. Just to be clear, I mean on PC, not on mobile. For ad free YouTube on mobile you have to use YouTube Vanced.

I signed up as an easy way to share pictures with my family, it was a great way to stay connected after I moved to Europe. Now, in 10 posts in my feed, about 6-7 are not from people I follow: ads, suggested posts, stuff you might like, etc. The app has become complete garbage.
