Comment I've been using it for a week now... (Score 1) 190

This was released about a week ago. Saying that, I just clicked the 'Check for updates' in the Help menu and it said a new version (4.0 Beta 1) is available - the same version I've been using for a week. I updated, and the only change I can see is the addition of the Feedback menu next to my APB and LastPass menus.

Submission + - Another blow to Irish online freedom (mcvuk.com)

Diabolus Advocatus writes: As an Irishman I am more and more disgusted every day by blatant disregard of net neutrality and freedom of speech in Ireland. Whether it's eircom censoring thepiratebay and cutting off users accused of filesharing or the blasphemy law introduced in 2009. Previously, it's been discovered from documents obtained through FOI that the Irish government is in discussions regarding implementing a filter like China, or Iran. Disgusting and worrying.

The latest development in the restriction of Irish internet use is from mobile operator o2, which has blocked access to the popular image hosting site i.imgur.com. As usual, the excuse is 'dear god, think of the children' pushed by the masterminds of the blockade and self-appointed internet police — The IWF .

Submission + - NVIDIA to exit chipset business (pcper.com)

Vigile writes: Once the darling of the enthusiast chipset market, NVIDIA has apparently decided to quit development of future chipsets for all platforms. This "state of NVIDIA" editorial at PC Perspective first highlighted the fact that the company was backing away from its plans to develop a DMI-based chipset for Intel's Lynnfield processors due to legal pressure from Intel and debates over licensing restrictions. That effectively left NVIDIA out in the cold in terms of high-end chipsets, but even more interesting is the later revelation that NVIDIA has only one remaining chipset product to release, what we know as ION 2, and that it was mainly built for Apple's upcoming products. NVIDIA still plans to sell its current offerings, like MCP61 for AMD platforms and current generation ION for netbooks and nettops, but will focus solely on discrete graphics options after this final release.

Submission + - French Prez Caught Violating His Own Copyright Law (ruwenzori.net)

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes: "French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been caught violating someone's copyright again. This time, presidential services made 400 unauthorized copies of a DVD when only 50 had been made by the publisher. Mr. Sarkozy, of course, is the one pushing the HADOPI law, which would disconnect the internet service of an alleged pirate after three allegations of infringement. This isn't the first time he's been connected to copyright violations, either. His party had to pay some 30,000 Euro for using a song without authorization. If he were he subject to his own law, Mr. Sarkozy would be subject to having his internet disconnected the next time he pirates something."

Submission + - The Fall of the Maya, New Clues Revealed (spacefellowship.com) 1

Matt_dk writes: For 1200 years, the Maya dominated Central America. At their peak around 900 A.D., Maya cities teemed with more than 2,000 people per square mile — comparable to modern Los Angeles County. Even in rural areas the Maya numbered 200 to 400 people per square mile. But suddenly, all was quiet. And the profound silence testified to one of the greatest demographic disasters in human prehistory — the demise of the once vibrant Maya society. What happened? Some NASA-funded researchers think they have a pretty good idea.

Ministry of Defense's "How To Stop Leaks" Document Is Leaked 141

samzenpus writes "A restricted 2,400 page-document put out by the MoD designed to help intelligence personnel with information security has been leaked onto the internet. Wikileaks notes that Joint Services Protocol 440 (JSP 440), was published in 2001 and lays out protocols to defend against hackers, journalists, and foreign spies. it says, 'Leaks usually take the form of reports in the public media which appear to involve the unauthorized disclosure of official information (whether protectively marked or not) that causes political harm or embarrassment to either the UK Government or the Department concerned... The threat [of leakage] is less likely to arise from positive acts of counter-espionage, than from leakage of information through disaffected members of staff, or as a result of the attentions of an investigative journalist, or simply by accident or carelessness.' " Looks like it's time to write JSP 441.

Sure MS might suck as a corporation, and release dodgy software and charge more then acceptable for it, but their hardware division is actually quite good. I have plenty of MS hardware and it is good quality, far better than the software. Don't paint all their products with the same brush.

The only thing preventing is their own population. I just don't think they would tolerate becoming prisoners in the their own nation.

They are prisoners in their own nation. They are not tolerating it. Hence the protests. Sure the fundamentalists have a solid backing among the populace but the rigged elections and censorship of protests show it is not as solid as they need to maintain power fairly.

It doesn't matter if they block TOR or just websites, they are still censoring what their people can see and read.
