Comment Re: Ban human drivers too.. (Score 1) 86

You are, in fact, entirely incorrect.

These systems commonly make mistakes that no human would ever make. Like confusing cracks in the road for lane lines, shadows for cars, for buildings for roads. And what I mean commonly, I mean you can get this to happen predictably every time if you just know what situation to put the car into. Humans don't make those kind of mistakes.

It's attitudes like yours that really show that level 2 ADAS systems should be banned. and I say this as someone who regularly uses a level 2 ADAS system that is comparable to Tesla's FSD, and in some ways better, that I really like.

The fact is the large majority of the public is too uninformed about the capabilities of these systems, and will trust them way too much, simply because their lack of understanding makes them think that it's magic.

You simply cannot trust them. they will make simple mistakes no human would ever make, constantly.

If there wasn't a human driver monitoring these systems, these cars would constantly get into accidents.

I suggest you actually do some research into the field.

Comment Banning is smart, targeting level 3 is not. (Score 1) 86

They should be banning level 2 ADAS systems. Banning level 3 systems is a moot point because they simply don't exist in practice, outside of highly controlled demos.

These level 2 systems that are in many cars now a days, lure people who don't understand the short-comings of the technology, into a false sense of security.

They are so good 99% of the time, that, even an educated person, who knows the technology well, can be lulled into thinking "oh it's so good so much of the time, I can look away for just a moment." except eventually you'll look away at the wrong time, and BAM. Someone will be dead.

At least when people text and drive, they KNOW they're doing something dangerous... but with these level 2 systems, sometimes their attention just slips... after all, how long can you watch your car drive flawlessly before you start to trust it too much? 1 hour? 2 hours? 4 hours?

I've seen my car drive me from Ottawa to Toronto and back, flawlessly. I've also seen my car confuse the side of a building for a road. The question is... 3 hours into a 5 hour drive... when peak boredom has kicked in... and you get a text message... or the radio starts acting funny... or you notice something about your glove-box you've never noticed before... will your attention drift?? Most of us will say "of course not!"... but what you end up doing in reality is very different from what you think you'd do in a hypothetical... and we have enough data already to know that even well versed people who understand the risks well, will routinely make the wrong decision.

Level 2 is the most dangerous autonomy level, and soon, the average car will have some sort of level 2 system in it... and that should scare the hell outta you.

Comment Re:Ban human drivers too.. (Score 0) 86

That's actually totally untrue. That lie was peddled by Tesla and is easily provably false.

Humans drive on average 120,000km between accidents (not life threatening accidents, just accidents). These advanced lane assist systems as found in Tesla and others, can barely make it 500km without making a mistake that would be catastrophic without a human intervening.

Right, and this is totally ignoring the fact that you can (and I have) many times bump start a gas car with a dead battery to get it going again. You can't do that with an electric car.

I love EVs. I think, over all, they are the superior car technology, but the amount of bold face lying the EV industry does makes me want nothing to do with them. They are a great option, but not a perfect one, and everyone who says otherwise is either delusional or lying.

What a lot of people don't realize is that automakers have advanced quite a bit in the last while, far more than Android Auto or Apple Carplay have. This article is right on every point. AA an AC are super distracting to use and are so problematic, but because people blame their car instead of Apple or Google which is more often than not where the issue lies, then people continue to think of these issues as an example of the automakers screwing up... but it's not...

Yes Omegle was used for some bad things, but it was the crown jewel of the internet! You could instantly be connected to any person, anywhere in the world. At no time in human history before was this possible.

This is one of the greatest losses humanity has ever suffered, and people don't realize it...
