Submission + - The "Bucky Ball Creation" Mystery Solved (livescience.com)

SchrodingerZ writes: Since 1985, scientists have been trying to determine how Buckyballs (scientifically named Buckminsterfullerene ) are created. They are molecules with the formula C60 (a fullerene ) that forms a hexagonal sphere of interlocking carbon atoms. "But how these often highly symmetric, beautiful molecules with extremely fascinating properties form in the first place has been a mystery." For over three decades the creation of these molecules have baffled the scientific community. Recently Florida State University, in cooperation with MagLab in Tallahassee Fl. have looked deeper into the creation process and determined their origin. It was already known the the process for buckyball creation was under highly energetic conditions over an instant, “We started with a paste of pre-existing fullerene molecules mixed with carbon and helium, shot it with a laser, and instead of destroying the fullerenes we were surprised to find they’d actually grown.” The fullerenes were able to absorb and incorporate carbon from the surrounding gas. This study will help to illuminate the path towards carbon nanotechnology and extraterrestrial environmental studies, due to buckyball's abundance in extrasolar clouds.

you think separate panels for separate windows is a *feature*? that's a huge FAIL. if you are in the >2 monitor zone, you are almost surely using xinerama. that means no XRANDR. and no way to maximize a window to one physical screen or all physical screens. roll in virtual desktops and try to use focus-follow-mouse and watch kwin give you mulit-second focus change latencies. and konsole? konsole?? it's barely maintained. it's "profiles" support is unbelievably buggy and has been so across release after release. clearly there is no one left who understands it. the strong impression given off by all of this is that KDE is developed by youths on single-screen desktops who quiver in delight while working on the 'social desktop' while basic functionality like speedy focus shifting and tty-based computing is left in the dust.

Submission + - US watchdog bans Photoshop use in cosmetics ads (extremetech.com)

MrSeb writes: "In an interesting move that should finally bring the United States’ fast-and-loose advertising rules and regulations into line with the UK and EU, the National Advertising Division (NAD) — the advertising industry’s self-regulating watchdog — has moved to ban the misleading use of photoshopping and enhanced post-production in cosmetics adverts. The ban stems from a Procter & Gamble (P&G) CoverGirl ad that photoshopped a model’s eyelashes to exaggerate the effects of NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara. There was a footnote in the ad’s spiel about the photo being manipulated, but according to the director of the NAD, that simply isn’t enough: “You can’t use a photograph to demonstrate how a cosmetic will look after it is applied to a woman’s face and then — in the mice type — have a disclosure that says ‘okay, not really.’” The NAD ruled that the ad was unacceptable, and P&G has since discontinued it. The ruling goes one step further, though, and points out that "professional styling, make-up, photography and the product’s inherent covering and smoothing nature” should be enough, without adding Photoshop to the mix. The cosmetics industry is obviously a good starting point — but what if the ban leaks over to product photography (I'm looking at you, Burger King), video gameplay demos, or a photographer's own works?"

Submission + - Universal claims right to remove any YouTube video (extremetech.com)

MrSeb writes: "It turns out that when Universal Music Group (UMG) got YouTube to pull the Megaupload music video, it wasn't using some arcane clause of the DMCA — it was in fact using powers that were granted by an agreement with YouTube in 2009. This agreement, which was signed back when Vevo launched, allows UMG to block or remove any video, irrespective of whether it infringes on Universal's copyrights or not."

Submission + - French President Nicholas Sarkozy's pad busted for (torrentfreak.com)

phonewebcam writes: "French President Nicholas Sarkozy is a man who has championed some of the most aggressive anti-piracy legislation in Europe. But today it’s revealed that the occupants of his very own office and home are responsible for a nice selection of pirate downloads using BitTorrent. Three strikes? Those with access to the Presidential Palace’s IP addresses have already doubled that quota.

Located near the Champs-Élysées in the French capital, Paris, the Élysée Palace is the official residence of President Sarkozy. As husband of ‘first lady’ and musician Carla Bruni, Sarkozy has helped promote and push through some of the toughest anti-filesharing legislation to be found anywhere in Europe."

Students Banned From Bringing Pencils To School Screenshot-sm 426

mernilio writes "According to UPI: 'A Massachusetts school district superintendent said a memo banning sixth graders from carrying pencils was written without district approval. North Brookfield School District interim Superintendent Gordon Noseworthy said Wendy Scott, one of two sixth-grade teachers at North Brookfield Elementary School, did not get approval from administrators before sending the memo to all sixth-grade parents, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported Thursday. The memo said students would no longer be allowed to bring writing implements to school. It said pencils would be provided for students in class and any students caught with pencils or pens after Nov. 15 would face disciplinary action for having materials 'to build weapons.'"

Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 — Gaming On Six Panels 111

MojoKid writes "AMD's 6-output Radeon has been seen in action at a number of events, but today the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition is being officially launched. HotHardware paired the card up with six 22" Dell LCD panels in a 3x2 configuration — with a max resolution of 5760x2160 — and ran it through a number of popular titles including Dirt 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Crysis. For specialized, high-end graphics cards like this, the market potential may be relatively small. If, however, the idea of multi-monitor gaming is appealing to you and you've got the means to score one of these cards (along with multiple displays), you won't be disappointed." Reader Vigile adds a different analysis of the card's six-monitor gaming: "PC Perspective found FPS games were basically unplayable because of the bezel through the middle of their vision while RTS and racing games like StarCraft 2 and DiRT 2 were spectacular."
