Can you Transfer Internet Domains Between Registrars? 8

This member from Clan Anonymous Coward queries: "I just got my annual blackmail letter from NSI, and based on their behavior over the last 12 months I don't want anything to do with them. How can I move my existing domain to another registrar? "

As I understand it he doesn't want to change a contact, but the registrar, i.e. he does not want to be billed by NetworkSolutions but by another company providing domain registrations.
  • the amount of trouble I've had with Register.com in the last 3-4 days has made me appreciate how easy it is do do things through NetSol.

I'll second that. Trying to register many different domains, under the same register.com login, for a client turned out to be hell when the client wished to gain control over his own domains.

Basically they don't allow you to move a domain to even another user at register.com, and this really ticks me off.

Also, their e-mails are less than informative about which domains you are changing information about. They just say that you are about to change this domain, and never care to specify which one.

And yes, I have mentioned this to their less-than-helpful-but-swift support service. They'll try to implement the changes "one day".

  • As much as I hate the money grubbing antics of NetworkSolutions (InterNIC), the amount of trouble I've had with Register.com in the last 3-4 days has made me appreciate how easy it is do do things through NetSol.

I fully expect, this situation to improve but right now, from a business stand point Register.com has to learn about service.

When you submit a transfer to a new registrar you will receive a new 2 year domain name licence as opposed to the ususal 1 year renewal. The reason why you have not seen much information from the new registrars regarding transfers is that the process is very difficult to technically automate. However, Melbourne IT (Australia) will in the next month be introducing a new automated transfer functionality making it just a click of a button to transfer your domain name from Network Solutions. Unlike any of the new registrars Melbourne IT has over 3 years experience as a registrar and registry through the administration of .com.au. This experience has seen them build a world class reliable registration system. This experience also means that they do all their registrations, re-delegations in real time. So there is no margin for error and you know the result instantly. They have automated all those aspects of domain names that have been time consuming in the past. Melbourne IT has a large customer service centre if you need to speak to someone about your domain name or anything you want to know about domain names. They also have international partners in over 10 different countries. CORE registrars have no customer service facilty and there is too many parties and systems involved before there is a connection with the NSI registry. I suggested you take a look at: http://www.internetnamesww.com
  • How can I change my registrar to register.com?

Presently, register.com is not accepting registrar transfers. In the very near future, register.com will allow domain name registrar's to be transferred. More information and procedures for transferring registrars will be announced.

This page seems to only be available to people who have registered domains with register.net.
  • Heya, the Internet Council of Registrars [corenic.org] can probably be of some use to you. Take a look at this page [corenic.org] on CORE's site for a list of registrars accredited by ICANN. They're pretty scant on details (big surprise) with respect to domain transfers, so I'll give you a few tips: Joker.com has the cheapest rates of them all, followed by Firstdomain.net; both are German setups. Casdns.net charges basically the same rates as good ole NSI, but they happen to be the only registrar that actually has any information on domain name transfers. They say that you are able to transfer domain names from any other accredited registrar and pay $35 per year to maintain the existing domain(s). That information in itself is ambiguous and I'm reluctant to be the guinea pig to transfer my domain from NSI to one of these registrars. Of course I'll be transferring my domain over in a few months when I get my letter of harrassment from NSI ;). One of these days I may get around to e-mailing some of the registrars, if clear information on this topic doesn't become available soon. In the meantime I'll wait for someone with an expired domain name to step up and test their luck. Good luck (hint, hint :P)...
