Surfin' Cablemodems!

Slashdot reader Robert Gash writes in with this problem:
Hello, I live in a MediaOne area, but I am unable to recieve 2-way cablemodem service (nor will I until 2000). I have been pressed to find information concerning the setup of Linux and the SurfBoard1200/1100 external cablemodems. I do understand some of the basics of the setup and how the modem works (Internal Webpages on the device help you set it up and dial), but I haven't seen any success stories w/ Linux. The mediaone people tell me that it works, but I'd like to know more. I don't want to sink $50/mo and $100 installation fee into a device that won't perform in Linux like I want. I have heard rumors that it is widely discussed in the MediaOne.* newsgroups, but I can't access those because I'm not a MediaOne subscriber. Can anyone provide some more information? Thanks.

Any takers?
