Windows Search
Windows Search is a desktop-based search platform that provides instant search capabilities for most file types and data types. Third-party developers can extend these capabilities by adding new file types or data types. Windows Search is a standard component in Windows 7 and Windows Vista and is enabled by default. Windows Search replaces Windows Desktop Search (WDS). WSS organizes the extracted elements of a collection. Windows Search Protocol allows clients to communicate with servers hosting WSS to ask questions and allow administrators to manage the indexing server. WSS analyzes files and extracts useful information. Then, WSS organizes the extracted information to make it easy for queries to be answered.

Everything
"Everything" is a search engine that instantly locates files and folders based on filenames for Windows. "Everything", unlike Windows search, displays all files and folders on your computer. To limit the number of files and folders displayed, you can use a search filter. "Everything" does not index file and folder names. It takes about a minute to build its database. It takes about 1 second to index a fresh Windows 10 install (roughly 120,000 files). All files can be searched using the content, search function. Searching for content in files is slow because they are not indexed. A fresh installation of Windows 10 (about 120,000) will take approximately 14 MB of RAM and less than 9MB of disk space. 1,000,000 files will require approximately 75 MB of RAM and 45 MB of storage space. Search windows will reflect any changes to the file system. "Everything" will work on Windows XP and Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8 or Windows 10.
