The Web of Things aims to create a decentralized Internet of Things by providing connected devices with URLs to make them discoverable and linkable, and defining a standard protocol and data model to make them interoperable. WebThings, which includes the WebThings Gateway, WebThings Framework, and WebThings Cloud, is an open-source implementation of the Web of Things. The WebThings Project was developed at Mozilla over a period of four years before it was spun out as a separate open source project. WebThings Gateway, a software distribution designed for smart home gateways, allows users to monitor and control their home directly over the internet without a middleman. It offers a web-based interface for monitoring and controlling smart home devices. A rules engine automates them, and an add-ons module extends the gateway to support a wide range existing smart home appliances.
