RPM Package Manager Description

The RPM Package Manager (RPM), a powerful package manager system, can build computer software from source and distribute it in easily distributable packages. It can also install, update, and uninstall packaged software. It can also query detailed information about installed software.
Verifying the integrity of packaged software. The RPM header contains metadata about the package. The header is a binary data structure that stores single bits of data in tags. Each tag has a predefined meaning and data type. These data types are not stored in the header, but must be read by the code that is reading the header. The number of the tags is all that is used in the header. Each tag can be either a plain scalar or an array of one of these types. Although the RPM code does not enforce this, it assumes that tags belonging to the same type system have the same number entries.
