Proton Drive Description

Proton Drive early-access provides encrypted cloud storage that is end-to-end encrypted. This encryption is used to protect sensitive documents using the same encryption that we use to secure email in Proton Mail, and events in Proton Calendar. While we continue to add new features to Proton Drive's platform, the early access version is perfect for certain use cases.

Securely backing up sensitive files such as financial documents, medical records, and copies of identity documents.
- Files stored in the cloud with end-to–end encryption so that you can access them from any device

Companies can scan and monitor your files with most cloud storage services like Google Drive and make a profit. They may also give your data to third parties. Proton Drive encrypts your data on your device before it is uploaded to our secure servers. This means that we don't have access to your files. We do not spy on your data and we make no money from ads.

File Sharing Option: Excellent, but quirky

    Edited: May 31 2022

Summary: Using the Drive is great for personal use, not for Sharing, but the latter is one of the critical services associated with online storage.

Positive: The 'share' link leads recipients to a page with two options: Download Folder and Get your own Proton Drive.

The shared folder is linked to the second option, not the first. But not reliably, only for those already logged in to the Proton service. For anyone else, the first option must be used, and then many more steps to access the actual file(s).

Negative: The link sharing is quite non-intuitive. Download Folder is what somebody new to the service will do, when sent a link to a shared folder. But to get to the actual shared files, you have to jump through hoops (download a zipped file, unzip it).

    New to Proton

    Edited: Sep 02 2022

Summary: I've been using their [paid] VPN and it seems solid. As I said above, their e-mail and their cloud storage is easy to use and it's nice to have the three services integrated into one provider.

Positive: The web page designs are fresh, uncluttered and easy to read. I currently use MEGA and I'm considering paying Proton for full-service VPN, e-mail and Drive combined. The price for 500 GB of combined storage is around $7 / month prepaid on a 2-year basis. I think that's very reasonable if you're willing to commit.

I'm not a sharer but a daily user of cloud storage and Proton Drive's features suit me very well.

Negative: Having to pay for 2 years in advance presumes a willingness to commit. I understand it's a business model but MEGA provides 400 GB (cloud storage only) for about the same ($6) month-to-month.
