PeerTube Description

Discover the power of free software that empowers you to regain control over your video content. PeerTube, created by Framasoft, stands as a decentralized and free alternative to typical video-sharing platforms, boasting over 400,000 videos contributed by 60,000 users, which have collectively been viewed more than 15 million times. Rather than aiming to overshadow existing video services, PeerTube seeks to provide an alternative that emphasizes distinct values. It is designed not to evolve into a massive platform that aggregates videos from across the globe but instead functions as a network of small, interconnected video hosts. Those with basic technical knowledge have the capability to set up their own PeerTube server, or instance, creating a space for their users and video content. Each instance operates autonomously, with its own set of moderators and administrators, allowing for a diverse and unique video hosting experience across the network. This structure fosters a community where content can thrive without the pressures of centralization.

PeerTube is exactly what we need now for P2P video/podcasts, etc.

    Date: Jun 21 2022

Summary: Use PeerTube server with the free Hive-Tube plugin installed, and your passive income will flow.

    5-stars! :)

Positive: PeerTube v4 and higher is awesome. Great p2p tech. It even comes with an easy to use docker container. Any server admin with basic skills can install and configure PeerTube. Remote storage and (soon) remote transcoding will be supported as well. You can't get much more decentralised than that.

Just fyi, there's also a free plugin for PeerTube server now called "Hive-Tube". Any video or podcast etc that you upload, or import from Youtube (and other sites) can be auto-monetized, providing you (and even your viewers/listeners if desired) with passive income.

Negative: Cons? I honestly can't think of any. Remote transcoding will be nice too, but that isn't really needed anyway unless you run a huge site like youtube or something.

Summary: PeerTube is a decentralized p2p approach to video platform where multiple instances host videos. It is a novel idea but currently lacks mass adoption.

    Positive: Free & Open Source.
    Easy to use.
    Decentralized & federated.
P2P streaming to reduce network load by sharing bandwidth between users.
    Community driven development.

Negative: Hosting instance needs lots of script installation - not easy for most users.
