Chris Davis, an Orbitz employee, originally created Graphite in 2006. It was a side project that eventually became their main monitoring tool. Orbitz released Graphite under the Apache 2.0 open-source license in 2008. Many large companies have used Graphite in production to help them plan for growth and monitor their e-commerce services. The Carbon service feeds metrics into the stack, which then writes the data to Whisper databases for long term storage.
