Jotr Description
Jotr is a transcription application designed for Mac users that operates with a local-first approach, ensuring that all processes are conducted on your Apple Silicon device without uploading any audio files, creating an account, or transferring recordings from your Mac. You can easily upload various audio or video formats, such as MP3, MP4, MOV, M4A, and WAV, to receive a raw transcript, a refined version, or a structured summary, all carried out locally on your machine. The app also offers features for exporting transcripts in formats like TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, or Word, and includes a timestamp-linked playback functionality that allows users to click on any line to navigate directly to that moment in the original recording. Jotr is specifically tailored for a variety of use cases, including meetings, lectures, interviews, podcasts, and video production workflows, making it a versatile tool for anyone needing transcription services. While it is free to use for basic transcription needs, a one-time purchase grants access to local AI-generated summaries and additional export options, and it requires macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon for optimal performance. This makes Jotr an excellent choice for those who prioritize privacy and convenience in their transcription tasks.

The ultimate local workspace for video creators and researchers. Edited: Jun 13 2026
Summary: I started with the two free trials and quickly upgraded for the Review Workspace. While the free version is a powerhouse for basic transcription, the Pro features turn it into a complete professional workflow. The ability to click any sentence to re-listen instantly with synced timestamps is flawless, allowing for precise verification and annotation. I’ve already recommended Jotr to my friends in podcasting and journalism; it’s truly a tailor-made, all-in-one solution for anyone whose work revolves around recordings. Whether you need to generate quick captions for YouTube or conduct deep qualitative research, Jotr replaces a clunky 3-app setup with one seamless interface. This one-time purchase is a massive value for the time it saves.
Positive: The free tier is incredibly generous—recordings under 20 minutes are free to transcribe with no limits on the number of files. For my YouTube workflow, this is a lifesaver. I just drop my final cut into Jotr, and it generates perfectly time-aligned SRT/VTT files for upload. No manual syncing or separate tools needed. Also, since my company has strict privacy policies against uploading data to the cloud, Jotr’s 100% local processing is exactly what I needed. It handles everything on-device without compromising security.
Negative: It can be quite resource-heavy since it runs AI models locally, though the transcription speed is surprisingly good. While it supports many export formats, I’d love to see direct integration with Notion or Obsidian in the future. The AI summary feature is a nice addition but still feels like it's in beta—it works, but the real star here is the manual review workspace.
