Grid Description
Open-sourcing Grid is the Guardian's new image service. This is the story about how Grid, the Guardian’s new image management system, was built. We worked closely with our editorial colleagues, and used a modern technology stack. It's all Open Source. A small, dedicated team has been working for the Guardian's new image-management service for about a year. The team used an agile approach to deliver it. They worked directly with users to quickly create a product that met their expectations and needs. The new service is integrated into our print workflow and used to publish almost half of our digital content images. The need for rich media sources became more urgent as the Editorial Tools teams worked to create a modern suite editorial products. These products included workflow management, content authoring, and editing of section pages.

If you don't already have one, you can upload to jalbum.net. We don't lock your images in one place, unlike other image sharing services. You have complete control over the management, storage, and presentation of your images. Your metadata is protected by open standards. There is no lock-in. You can host your images with us, or any other web hotel you choose. Your galleries will work without us. There are few options for stylish presentations from competitors (mostly, only CSS variations of the same functionality). You have many options for templates/themes (we call them skins), each with its own unique functionality and presentation.
