The block header relay networks retrieves block headers from sender chains, generates proofs for the validity of block headers and sends them along with the proofs (set up on receiver chains) to the updater contracts. The updater contract keeps a light client state. It adds block headers to the sender's chain automatically once the associated proofs have been verified and updates the main chain of the senter's chain.
