Eighteen years ago, we began the development of the Easy Trace package. We envisioned it as an AutoCad-oriented digitization software (vectorizer). The COMTEC Exhibition was the first time the software was displayed. It quickly became apparent that the "paper-to digit conversion" method was not only needed for CADs, but also for GIS-technologies. GIS-usable data quickly made a distinction between "drawing", and "cartographic" digitizing programs. Soon, specialized CAD vectorizers were available and some favorites were established. However, the majority of participants in the field of GIS-technologies dropped out of the race. It took us many years to equip Easy Trace using the base set functions. The program's main strengths were its simplicity, low price, and speedy image processing. We then suggested a new method for extracting vector data from an image. The package was able to compete with them.
