Citi Virtual Account Numbers Description

Citi makes it virtually impossible for someone to steal my credit card number by randomly generating a Citi card number that you can use online. You can shop online or by mail and use a randomly generated Citicard Virtual Account Number instead. To begin using Virtual Account numbers, simply click Enroll in/Get Below. All purchases made using your temporary number will be included on your monthly statement along with all other purchases. Each transaction will also include the Virtual Account Number. Virtual Account Numbers are not available for all Citi Cards. Logging in or registering for Card Benefits is a good way to view the benefits of your Citi card.

Summary: When it works, I'm left with a potentially false sense of security that I have control over my virtual account numbers. When it doesn't work (e.g. their backend service prevents create/delete/edit), it removes all doubt.

Positive: I like the concept...but in reality it seems like there's a gap between marketed features and how it's actually implemented.

Negative: In reality, the service sometimes is down - and you cannot create, edit, or worse, lock down any existing credit card numbers. Chat support is of no use, as they cannot handle it, and require a call in (so dated!)

I've seen postings as well that merchants can charge inactive cards, or go over the virtual limit. So, is this just marketing then?
