AutoIt Description

AutoIt v3 is a free scripting language that resembles BASIC and is specifically created for automating the Windows graphical user interface and performing general scripting tasks. It achieves automation through a blend of emulated keystrokes, mouse movements, and manipulation of windows and controls, enabling users to execute tasks in ways that other programming languages may not handle reliably. After evaluating various editors for AutoIt, we identified SciTE as a particularly promising option, ultimately developing a customized Lexer for enhanced syntax highlighting and folding, along with a dedicated installer known as SciTE4AutoIt3. Originally, AutoIt was intended for scenarios involving the deployment of PCs, where it could reliably automate and configure large numbers of machines. Over time, it has evolved into a robust language capable of handling intricate expressions, user-defined functions, loops, and all the features that experienced scripters anticipate. Moreover, AutoIt is compact, self-sufficient, and compatible with every version of Windows right from installation, without the need for any cumbersome runtime environments. Its versatility and ease of use make it a go-to choice for many automation tasks across different user levels.

    Great language but easily decompiled

    Date: Sep 14 2025

Summary: Great product but needs extra protection so people won't steal your work. The better IDE would only do good or an integration within tools like VSCode studio.

Positive: Flexible language, wide support for Windows functions

Negative: Although the code is easily decompilable to the original source format, it needs some sort of obfuscator like the one made by PELock—AutoIt Obfuscator—to prevent source code theft from the competition. Support forums is terrible, they hide any post claiming how easy is to decompile AutoIt executable back to the source code...

    Great tool

    Edited: Jul 07 2025

Summary: The user forum is active and very helpful. But they will NOT assist in automating game cheats. This fact is clearly posted in the forum rules. Multiple offenses will get you banned. I suspect that’s the cause of any negative reviews you might read.

Positive: Used AutoIt nearly every day for 5 years or more, at a large multinational, and have written dozens of applications, including data scrapers, report parsers, barcode readers, and mission critical tools to monitor critical hardware and alert support staff if that hardware goes offline.
It has a pretty flat learning curve. It creates standalone executables, and (for the most part) doesn’t require any .dll files to be deployed. There’s downloadable help and a custom version of the SciTE code editor. You can also use Visual Studio Code, as there’s an AutoIt plugin available for that.

Negative: AutoIt is Windows only. If you’re a Linux shop, look elsewhere.

Devs and mods have a superiority complex

    Date: Mar 28 2024

Summary: I would give my left nut for an alternative. One only needs to visit their forums and read the responses by the moderator there, and developers.

Positive: The product itself is good, the community is not. Iv'e used this product for years, however i've refrained from too much activity in the forums due to the below.

Negative: The mod team and devs are horrible. They don't even understand the word automation and that is the entire reason for this application.
