Hard to configure, not easy to grow Date: Jun 20 2020
Summary: Amazon Workspaces is fantastic for users who need a reliable Desktop computer from anywhere. Amazon's use of registration codes and generally restrictive access to resources makes it a more secure solution than most.
The client connects quickly and is lightweight enough to be used on extremely old computers. The data sent between your computer and Amazon is tiny, which makes for a great experience on old computers or when the internet connection is less than optimal.
The service has never gone down for me or my clients. It's what you expect and its what you get.
The downside is that there is just no way that any 'regular' person could setup a Workspace. It's designed to be setup by someone with technological know-how. Even so, it's just not friendly. It's a frustrating experience.
A lot of people will expand from one Workspace to two, then three, etc. It seems reasonable that these computers will all be able to talk to each, forming a small remote network. This is not the default experience. You can make it work, but it's just not what Workspace was designed to do.
You can increase your RAM, hard drive, and CPU settings fairly easily, but recovery is not easy. There are Workspace images or templates, but they're are technical restrictions on how to configure them correctly. It's generally not worth the time, expense or frustration for smaller teams.
It's infrequent these days for an OS to fail or for a virus to blow-up your system. Amazon Workspaces rarely fails (though it has happened) and OS upgrades happen every few years. When it happens, it will be time-consuming and un-fun. But, for the many days in between, Amazon Workspaces will simply work.Positive: The Workspace has never gone down or dropped a connection.
The client to connect is more secure than most remote desktop services.
Solid performance - no lag or performance spikes.Negative: The initial configuration of a Workspace must be done by an administrator.
