Summary: Five stars from me. Aider is a strong choice for developers who want terminal-native AI pair programming without giving up control of their repo, model choice, or Git workflow.
It is not as flashy as some full AI IDEs, but that is part of the appeal. For developers who already live in the terminal and want a practical AI coding partner that can edit real code, Aider is one of the most useful tools in the space.Positive: Aider is one of those developer tools that feels simple in the best way. It runs in the terminal, works with my existing repo, edits files directly, and fits naturally into a Git-based workflow instead of forcing me into a whole new IDE.
I really like that it is open source and model-flexible. Being able to use different LLMs, including cloud and local models, makes it much more useful for developers who care about cost, privacy, speed, and picking the right model for each job.
The repo-aware workflow is a big win too. Aider can map a larger codebase, make multi-file changes, and help with real tasks like refactoring, fixing bugs, adding tests, and building features. That makes it feel more like pair programming than just asking a chatbot for snippets.
The Git integration is also great. I would also be cautious with secrets, shell commands, and production-sensitive repos. Aider is powerful because it can work directly with your code, but that means you still need good review habits and guardrails.
