Description

Bitcoin Core is designed to determine which blockchain contains legitimate transactions, and its users only recognize transactions from that specific blockchain, establishing it as the preferred Bitcoin blockchain for the wider community. This user base plays a crucial role in maintaining the decentralized nature of Bitcoin, as they each operate their own Bitcoin Core full nodes, which adhere to the same set of rules to validate the blockchain. The process is free from any voting or susceptible mechanisms; it relies solely on consistent software executing identical protocols—essentially "math"—to assess the same blocks and arrive at uniform decisions regarding the validity of the blockchain. By ensuring that every block and transaction it accepts is valid, Bitcoin Core not only enhances security but also works to thwart potential control by miners and financial institutions over Bitcoin. Additionally, Bitcoin Core offers unique privacy features that can obscure the connection between users and their transactions, further safeguarding user anonymity in the network. In this way, Bitcoin Core not only bolsters the integrity of the network but also empowers individuals with greater control over their financial privacy.

Description

Bitnodes is under development with the aim of estimating the total size of the Bitcoin network by identifying all accessible nodes within it. To achieve this, the methodology involves recursively sending getaddr messages to discover every reachable node, beginning with a predefined set of seed nodes. Since Bitnodes operates on Bitcoin protocol version 70001, any nodes that utilize an earlier version will not be included in the findings. The Python-based crawler's implementation can be found on GitHub (ayeowch/bitnodes), and detailed instructions for deploying the crawler are provided in the documentation titled Provisioning Bitcoin Network Crawler. This project is crucial for understanding the network's topology and can help in analyzing its overall health and performance.
