990.tax is an official IRS e-file provider designed to simplify the tax filing process for nonprofit organizations. We created this service with the needs of small nonprofits in mind, drawing on our personal experiences and industry best practices.
While serving as volunteers on a school PTA board, we encountered a frustrating and complex tax filing process for our nonprofit. The Form 990, even in its EZ version, felt overwhelming, and the available tools for filing both federal and state forms were lacking in functionality and user-friendliness.
With our backgrounds as engineers experienced in creating high-quality products, we recognized the opportunity to improve this situation. We assembled a dedicated team to develop a user-friendly tax filing service aimed at nonprofits, ensuring it would save valuable time for volunteers and reduce expenses for these organizations.
By utilizing 990.tax, users can effortlessly file their nonprofit's tax returns online, including various forms such as IRS Form 990-N, IRS Form 990-EZ, IRS Form 8868, as well as state-specific forms like CA FTB Form 199, CA DOJ Forms RRF-1, and CT-TR-1. With our platform, we strive to make tax filing a seamless experience for nonprofit organizations everywhere.

Taxcalibur serves as a desktop application on Windows designed specifically for small tax practices, facilitating both tax preparation and practice management. It efficiently organizes a variety of client-related data, including records, returns, documents, checklists, reminders, contact notes, invoices, and receipts, ensuring that client information is securely encrypted and stored directly on the user's device. In the preparation of tax returns, the app prioritizes privacy by removing personal information prior to utilizing AI for document reading, while also calculating federal Form 1040 and Colorado DR 0104 returns, completing official forms, and providing preparers with detailed calculations for their review. Users have the capability to import documents such as PDFs, Word files, and images from their phones, monitor the progress of returns, recognize any missing documentation, send follow-up emails, and produce both forms and client summaries for their records. Once the preparation is finalized, the completed packages are transferred to Drake Tax for submission, as Taxcalibur itself does not handle the filing of returns. The application utilizes the preparer’s own Claude account or a connected assistant for AI reading, keeping its AI functionality distinct from that of Drake Tax. Additionally, Taxcalibur accommodates users by supporting 14 different interface languages, although all official IRS forms are provided exclusively in English, ensuring both accessibility and compliance.
