Unified Payments Interface is a real time payment system developed by National Payments Corporation of India. It allows seamless and instant transfers of funds between bank account through a mobile platform. UPI was launched in 2016 and revolutionized digital transactions by allowing users to send money, pay bills and make purchases using their smartphones, without needing traditional banking methods or card numbers. It uses a Virtual Payment Address to simplify transactions and eliminate the need to share sensitive banking details. UPI is highly secure and interoperable. It integrates multiple banks into one interface, and supports features such as QR code payments and scheduled transfers. Its widespread adoption has contributed significantly to India's move towards a cashless society.
