Best S3 Option for Scale Up AND Scale Down Date: Oct 14 2025
Summary: ONTAP S3 is well documented, easy to use, and integrates with all other data protection features built into ONTAP that make it a no-brainer to protect data locally and at 1 or more DR sites.
Positive: Easy to implement, fully supports all needed S3 APIs including multipart upload. Allows for Object File duality (access same data over S3, CIFS, or NFS)
Negative: Uses ONTAP SnapMirror replication (a bonus for my use case) instead of storage lifecycle policies (which require way more sites and copies to achieve a lower level of protection) to replicate data to other sites. So in my case this is a plus but for folks wanting automated storage lifecycle policies to offsite protect data I recommend they use StorageGRID instead. In my case I was looking to take advantage of RAID_TEC and large raid groups to achieve much higher level of protection for edge sites with far fewer minimum disks (1 large M2 SSD in my edge use case)
