Lifespan Description

Lifespan was created to address the increasing dependence on flash-based storage. Knowing how long your flash-based storage devices and solid-state drives have left can help you get the most out of them. Flash-based storage devices are limited in their lifespan. If they reach this limit, they may lose their performance or cease to work altogether. It is important to know how much time they have left, especially in situations where these devices are being used frequently. Flash-based storage devices store data on solid-state memory non-volatile NAND flash memory. This flash memory is limited in its ability to be 'programmed or erased' only a few times. Drives can have less than 2,000 or more than 10,000 program erase cycles or programme/e cycles depending on the quality of the NAND chip used. This equates to about 100 TB of usable life for a solid-state drive that is middle-of the road.
