CoCalc Description

Online teaching of scientific software. CoCalc is an online computer lab that eliminates the pain of teaching scientific programming. Each student works 100% online, in their own isolated workspace. You can track the progress of each student online in real-time. You can access a file from any student at any time, right from where they are working. TimeTravel allows you to see every step taken by a student to reach the solution. You can use integrated chat rooms to direct students to where they are working or to discuss the files you have collected with your teaching assistants. The Activity Log in the project records when and by whom files were accessed. No need to worry about complicated software configurations - everyone can start working in seconds! Everybody uses the exact same software stack so there are no inconsistencies between your environment and that of your students.

Collaborative Jupyter Notebooks, LaTeX, Linux Terminals and X11

    Date: Feb 23 2022

Summary: I started using CoCalc in 2013 when I started writing CoCalc. All my development of CoCalc since then has been in CoCalc. I also use all the tools of CoCalc -- code editing, notebooks, Latex, Linux, X11, etc., in developing and maintaining CoCalc.

Positive: I like having realtime collaboration for everything, including file editing, Jupyter notebooks, terminals, X11, etc. Fully usable in web browser.

Negative: There are many exciting features that still haven't been implemented.

Great tool for data science projects

    Date: May 10 2021

Summary: CoCalc has some features like live-editing which makes it much more desirable than other similar software in the market. There are some limitations like lack of a user friendly interface, but it can be mostly overlooked.

Positive: It's completely browser-based, so it can easy run on lower-end systems. Live-editing feature allows multiple users to work on the same code simultaneously without needing to refresh. Mobile version is also better than most other similar apps. It also allows installing of different python modules and packages, which makes it suitable for all kinds of projects.

Negative: The interface is definitely not the best. It is also difficult to organize or browse through the notebooks when you have large pieces of code.
