Interview with Setyl’s CEO: Inside the IT Asset Management Platform

By Slashdot Staff

Managing IT assets is one of the biggest challenges for growing companies. From tracking laptops and software licenses to maintaining ISO 27001 and SOC 2 compliance and controlling spend, IT teams face constant pressure to stay efficient and secure.

That’s why Setyl was built. A modern IT asset management solution designed for midsize and larger organizations, Setyl centralizes hardware, software, users, and spend data into one intuitive system, helping IT managers gain full visibility and control over their asset landscape.

We sat down with Christopher Batts, CEO of Setyl, to talk about the origins of the company, who it serves today, and what’s next for this fast-growing platform.

Why did you decide to build Setyl? Where did the idea for the IT asset management software come from?

“Setyl was built to solve an issue I encountered in every business I’d worked in: there was no effective way to manage IT equipment and licenses.

“When I started speaking with other professionals and organizations, I realized just how widespread the problem was — from a former employee of a major bank who still had his old company laptop 3 years after leaving, to a finance manager who realized she was spending tens of thousands a year on a subscription no one was using, and an IT manager who was relying on a spreadsheet because his enterprise ITAM tool required a four-day training course, held at his head office in another country, before he could understand how to use it.

“When you consider that hardware and software can total thousands of dollars per employee each year, along with data security risks and operational inefficiencies, the financial and compliance impact is huge. That’s why I set out to build Setyl, giving teams a centralized IT asset management platform that’s both comprehensive and easy-to-use.”

Who uses Setyl today?

“We designed Setyl for IT managers and system admins in midsize and larger companies. At this scale, organizations typically need more capability and automation than what spreadsheets or lightweight tracking tools can offer, but don’t have the resources or appetite for the complexity of large enterprise solutions.

“Our typical customers have between 80 and 2,000 employees. Many already use systems like MDMs, basic asset trackers or even spreadsheets, but reach a stage when they need a centralized system with more advanced features and automations.

“While the need spans industries, we see notable adoption among banks and financial institutions, professional services, and tech companies.”

Why do IT teams need asset management software like Setyl?

“IT teams usually look for asset management software like Setyl to make their day-to-day work more efficient and accurate. But we also see specific triggers that drive the need, especially around cost control and compliance.

“For example, teams often come to us when:

  • They need to prepare for or demonstrate compliance with ISO 27001 or SOC 2 standards.
  • A missed contract renewal led to an expensive or unnecessary auto-renewal.
  • Employees leave while still holding onto company laptops or other devices.
  • Rapid growth or acquisitions make tracking and managing assets too complex for manual systems, and require scalable structures.
  • Software spend is rising, but no one has a complete view of costs or usage.”

“These are all pain points that Setyl is designed to eliminate.”

How does Setyl help IT managers?

“Setyl delivers three key outcomes for IT teams: improved operations, reduced costs, and stronger compliance.

“As a first step, Setyl provides complete visibility over hardware, software, users, vendors, and spend — all in one centralized place. Using this as a foundation, teams can then achieve their next objectives:

  1. Operational effectiveness: Bringing structure to the daily complexity of running IT, from assigning and retrieving assets during onboarding and offboarding to managing full asset lifecycles and inventory tracking.
  1. Cost savings: Gaining a complete picture of IT spending, preventing unnecessary expenses (surveys show up to 30% of IT budgets are wasted), tracking software renewals, and improving forecasting.
  1. Compliance and regulatory readiness: Building a comprehensive information asset register, handling vendor risk assessments, tracking access management, and maintaining documentation needed to meet ISO 27001, SOC 2, and other standards.”

What differentiates Setyl from other IT asset management solutions?

“Unlike many enterprise platforms or smaller manual tools, Setyl is purpose-built for mid-market and larger organizations of around 80 to 2,000 employees. It offers a comprehensive suite of features tailored to their needs without unnecessary complexity.

“Additional factors which set Setyl apart include:

  • Combining asset, software, and people management: No need to switch between systems or duplicate data. All information is unified in one platform, automatically linking assets, users, and software for complete visibility and control.
  • Extensive out-of-the-box integrations: Teams can consolidate all their data, automate workflows, and get started quickly thanks to native integrations which include Intune, NinjaOne, Jamf, Iru, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, BambooHR, HiBob, Okta, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and many more.
  • An intuitive user experience: We’ve built Setyl to be the most user-friendly IT asset management solution on the market — not just for IT teams, but also for finance, HR, and other departments. It enables collaboration across the organization, allowing non-technical colleagues to take part in asset tracking, budgeting, and reporting.”

What’s next for Setyl?

“Looking ahead, we’re continuing to strengthen Setyl’s three core modules — People, Assets, and Apps (software) — to help IT managers manage an ever-growing set of responsibilities across systems, vendors, compliance, and cost control.

“A major focus is on expanding our software asset management capabilities, helping organizations better track software usage, eliminate overlap, and negotiate renewals more strategically.

“Every development at Setyl is driven by the needs and feedback of the IT community. We’re proud to see that reflected in the customer reviews, industry recognition, and awards we’ve received over the years, and we’ll keep working closely with our users to deliver even greater visibility and control.”
