Submission + - Hacker 'Sabu' gets lenient sentence after helping US (bbc.co.uk)

k280 writes: A convicted hacker-turned-informant, who was facing in excess of 20 years in prison, has been handed a sentence of a year's supervision.

Hector Xavier Monsegur — known as "Sabu" — was arrested in 2011 on hacking charges.

He had faced a lengthy term, but instead agreed to work with US authorities to identify other hacking suspects.

The FBI said Monsegur had stopped more than 300 hacking attacks.

In a New York court, a judge sentenced him to seven months — which he has already served — and a year's supervision.

Apple

Submission + - Adobe and Apple didn't unit test for "forward date" bugs. Do YOU? (adobe.com)

llamafirst writes: As the year flipped to 2013, we learned that Adobe and Apple don't test for "forward date" bugs. Adobe prevented any copy of FrameMaker 10 from launching and Apple broke Do Not Disturb for the first week of 2013. Surely some more critical and safety systems also have lurking issues. Got tips for catching time/date bugs "from the mysterious future"? (also, oblig link to Falsehoods programmers believe about time)

Submission + - That link you just posted could cost you 300 Euros (the-digital-reader.com)

Nate the greatest writes: Do you like to tweet or share links to interesting news articles? According to a coalition of Irish newspapers, that makes you a pirate. The National Newspapers of Ireland has adopted a new policy. Any website which links to one of the 15 NNI member newspapers will have to pay a minimum of 300 euros, with the license fee going up if you post more links.

Note that this is not a fee to post an excerpt or some punitive measure for the copying of an entire article. No, the NNI wants to charge for links like. It's almost as if this organization has no idea how the web works. Or maybe they have found an elaborate way to commit suicide.
