Submission + - If you had to lecture on Cyber Terrorism 1

quantumghost writes: I have a high likelihood of presenting for a group of about 400 healthcare workers at a disaster preparedness conference next year. It is a 20 minute slot (and nothing more than a primer), but obviously, I want to capture their attention. I was thinking of working with the venue to set up a fake WiFi hotspot to capture those who randomly link to any hotspot, but how do I use that to full effect (e.g. anyone ever light up all their phones at once)? Or any suggestions about how to get their attention? Any topics that you think should be stressed? My plans for the talk will be about ransomware (and the need for backups), attacks on medical devices (hacking pacemakers, insulin pumps etc), (spear) phising attacks on providers/institutions, and awareness of social engineering — are there other topics that should be addressed?

Submission + - Tom Clancey Dead at 66 (cnn.com)

quantumghost writes: Spy thriller writer Tom Clancy, whose best-selling books became blockbuster films [and video games], has died, his publisher said Wednesday. He was 66. Clancy's publisher, the Penguin Group, said the author died in Baltimore on Tuesday. The written statement did not indicate the cause of death.

Submission + - Man robbed of Grandtheft Auto V (police.uk)

quantumghost writes:

Police and London Ambulance Service attended and took the 23-year-old man to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. The victim had been shopping and was on his way home when he was hit with a brick. He was then stabbed and robbed. A copy of Grand Theft Auto, a watch and mobile phone were stolen during the robbery. The motive for the attack is unclear at this stage.

I believe the motive was for a high score.

Submission + - What would you build into a new home?

quantumghost writes: We have elected to undertake the formidable task of building a new home. We are going with an established builder and an established floor-plan. My question to the horde is: "What new technology would you add/incorporate to a new home to make it your dream?" I'm mainly looking for ideas that are best incorporated early in the process (we're still designing) (e.g. wiring for a home music system), but other ideas that can be bolted on afterwards are also appreciated.

What say you Slashdot, what would you like to have in your dream house?

Submission + - New island appears off coast of Germany (telegraph.co.uk) 4

quantumghost writes: Despite its youthful age the sickle-shaped island lying 16 miles off the coast of the German state of Schleswig Holstein is already home to around 50 different plant species and proved popular with sea birds such as herring gulls and oyster catchers, eager to take advantage of its unspoilt and pristine environment.

Formed over just 10 years, the rapid appearance of the island has surprised scientists familiar with the strong winds and shifting shifts that characterise Germany's North Sea coast.

Submission + - Possible ninth planet (nationalgeographic.com)

quantumghost writes: An as yet undiscovered planet might be orbiting at the dark fringes of the solar system, according to new research.

Too far out to be easily spotted by telescopes, the potential unseen planet appears to be making its presence felt by disturbing the orbits of so-called Kuiper belt objects, said Rodney Gomes, an astronomer at the National Observatory of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro.

Kuiper belt objects are small icy bodies—including some dwarf planets—that lie beyond the orbit of Neptune.
