Well, take windows movie maker for instance. They give that out for free and provide updates for free. Now, I am not a windows advocate but I just wanted to give you an example. Unless there's a significant update then there's no reason for the charge. One option could have been to continue to offer the app for free but offer the updated features as an option one could buy separately. You know how apple is.. backwards compatibility is not their #1 priority so having the latest software is almost a must.
