Submission + - Ask Slashdot: How to stop trainwrecks? 5

janimal writes: Yesterday evening Poland experienced a train crash in which 16 people perished and some 58 were wounded. It boggles the mind, why some form of train crash prevention mechanisms, like TAWS in airplanes, or what Mercedes-Benz puts in its higher end cars, are not in widespread use on trains. I don't mean safety systems that depend on the tracks to work, but systems that work independently of infrastructure. I'm sure that not only Poland could save many lives by using such technology. Furthermore, by this time, putting together devices like this should be dirt cheap (relatively speaking on train scale). Does anyone out there have any ideas on how something like this could work?
