Journal Journal: Why a Job Scheduler?

After working for a famous free software company I realized that among all solutions for production administration tools, there's no option on scheduling as Unix Administrators are used to.

Ok, we have crontab. But it has nothing really useful to job scheduling but running scripts at the right time. There are no control on what happened, there's no controle on how long did it take, there's no control even if it was really executed.

So that's why I'm planing a Job Scheduler. I'd like to help sysadmins that many times see themselves obligated to use non-free options to schedule their job.

So I've chosen Saturn. For those who don't know (to tell the truth I didin't), Saturn is the roman name for Chronos, the greek god of time. Parent of Jupiter (Zeus).

Journal Journal: Live and let live

In times when cleverness is missing and the war is as near as 40 year ago I remembered an old song. It might remember many the rippies, but for me it remembers the peace propoused by them and the passive resistence against the war (Vietnam in that time, Korea and Iraq now a days)

  • Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
    Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
  • Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
    Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
    Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
  • Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
    Parsely, sage, rosemary, & thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
  • Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
    Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
  • Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
    Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Journal Journal: Learning How to Learn

This month I saw something I should already had previewed.

As some of you know I work for Conectiva in Brazil, involved in a migration project from Oracle to PostgreSQL at Vesper (a telecom company in Brazil). And the last part of the project was a PostgreSQL support contract, provided by Conectiva and dbExperts.

Well, while the migration was in course there were a couple of new applications that were successfully directly developed in the new plataform (PostgreSQL). Of course the has found may problems, and what suprised them the most was that they solved them by theirselves, whith no support from Conectiva neither dbExperts.

Today Vesper S.A. believes that they doesn't need to contract PostgreSQL support, because they can do it by theirselves.

I should have known better, I should have previewed this. This kind of support is based in information, and should not work for so long.

This is the Lesson for this month. Supporting free software is basing your bussiness in information, and might stop working as soon as your client discovers that he can look for the information by himself.

The Media

Journal Journal: Where is the Matrix? 1

When I first have heard about The Matrix I refused to read any kind of article, synopsis or critic about the movie, I just went to the nearest movie theater and watched it (one of the best movies I have ever watched). I loved it, and since then I've been wainting for Matrix Reloaded.

Now I know that Matrix Reloaded will be launched in May 15th. But why waiting all this time to release a single movie? Isn't 4 years enough?

But not satisfied by launch Matrix Reloaded Warner is launching The Animatrix. A set of nine anime shorts (the first is about 9 mins) starting at February 4th (download avaiable soon)

I hope not to see another postpone, again.

Journal Journal: mini-pub waking up 1

Two weeks after my new year resolutions, I'm already seeing results. ;o)

mini-pub is waking up. I submited several modifications and its activity raised to 60%. That's good, mainly because I still haven't released a new version and no news were posted anywhere.

I hope to see mini-pub grow as soos as I ask for help (mainly for other languages: Java, Delphi/Kylix), and after post it to

For those interested, you can learn more about mini-pub here or here.

Journal Journal: I love this game

I know that this can sound conceited, but this was one of the best comments I have ever done. It's about stupid linking polices and a German lawyer fighting against them. Take a look.

Here is the comment:

  • Don't

    Don't link
    Don't point
    Don't recommend
    Don't support
    Don't save
    Don't forward
    Don't cite
    Don't comment
    Don't argue
    Don't protest
    Don't ask
    Don't learn
    Don't remember
    Don't read
    Don't look
    Don't think!
    Don't live!
    Don't exist!

Until now it received a +1 Interesting, and has a Score: 3

Journal Journal: New Year's (2003) Resolutions

Every new year is the same old sh*t. We always want to do more then we have done in the past, and we always make new resolutions (I mean, they're always the same :o)

  • Try to keep /. journal up-to-date.
    Fix mini-pub project
    Fix cchatd project
    Start Saturn project
Start a new blog in Portuguese (for my brazilian friends)
Find a better job and a better salary
    Try to (avoid) get married
Make public the cure of cancer
    Decreed the world peace

Well, not that much, but enough to know that I won't do everything.

Journal Journal: Turning 50

I'm turning 50 karma points (48 so far), I expect that before may I'll be 50. So, what happens then? I know that I can't have no more points, but what if I still keep doing good comments, and after +5 moderations I receive a -1 moderation? Is this fair?

What are the advantages that 50-karma-users have? Are they special? Can they post 3-scored-comments? Can they sign as CowboyNeal?

Journal Journal: What can foreings do

I have discussed a lot about SSSCA/CBDTPA and DMCA, and have stated that both are legal freaks showing everybody how flawful is the representative system the way it is implemented in the USA. (you can see a sample here)

Ok, I'm against CBDTPA and DMCA, but as many of yoiu know I'm not american, I'm brazilian (just like M.Tossati), and I can't just solve this by voting and/or writing my senator/congress-man. What else can I do?

I know that these laws can destroy many of the economic system implemented in the USA, and the most favorable countries are emerging economies, like China, India and Brazil. But I prefer a clean fight, I prefer to fight with all competitors. :o)

So, does anybody knows what can I do?

Journal Journal: Digital Widows

Two years ago I saw a website about women that is marriage, or have a stable relationship, with geeks (actually computer geeks). It was a pretty interesting site, called Digital Widow (it used to be there, now there's only a .net advertise)

There were many jokes there, but there were many interesting things, like tips and advices for the Digital Widow. The most interesting for me was something like this:

  • If he arrives worried about a problem he can't solve, don't ask him to stop thinking about it, try to help him. Ask him about the problem, even if you don't understand a word of everything he'll say, he'll probably find de answer very quickly and will then forget it.

Which is a very useful advice (I'm sure everybody will agree with me), for the programmer and for the programmer's wife, she'll have his attention very soon.

Now I want to ask, does anybody knows any kind of website about these little details of our lives? I care a lot about my wife and with these kind of tips/advices I know we'll both feel much better. And I bet that many of you will too.

Journal Journal: What to do after receive a death threat? 2

I thought it would never happen to me, but last week I received a death threat. I'm not too worry about this, the threatner lived in my house the whole year of 2001, I don't think he can actualy do any real harm.

But I really don't know what to do about this, I should have this on tape, but I didn't expect this kind of thing. What else can I do?

Does anybody else has passed through any kind of situation like this? Does anybody else has anythig good to say?

Journal Journal: Late post => unfair moderation

Late posts takes to unfair moderation, I mean usually. A good post of mine (I think I deserve at least Insightful) about CBDTPA and Sen. Hollings top 5 support industries.

Once again I claim for the end of all this unfair elective system (known as democracy) where the legislators do everything to lobbyists and (almost) nothing for the citizens.

Journal Journal: Fans? Do I have Fans?!?

Today I realized that I have fans in /. That's so not me! :o)

I don't diserve fans. C'mon, I'm boring, my comments are futile and flamebait, I can't write in english good enough... Oh, I dont deserve fans!

Anyway, for those who really believe that I'm the kind of guy who you would like to be, or to have near you, or anything like, Thanks a lot, I always thoght I didn't deserve it, and that I would never have anything like this.

Journal Journal: First Post

First post! ;o) Now I can do this being certain that I'll not be mod-down!

But I'll use this Journal as a non-futile (although my futileness is very high lately) blog, I'll try to keep topics in a certain level; but I'll warn, I don't think I'm capable of doing this! ;o)
