Submission + - IBM Trying to Patent Restaurant Waits

theodp writes: "If all goes IBM's way, it'll soon constitute patent infringement if Bennigan's gives you a free lunch for being inconvenienced by a long wait for your meal. Big Blue is seeking a patent for its Method and Structure for Automated Crediting to Customers for Waiting, the purported 'invention' of three IBM Researchers, which IBM notes 'could be implemented completely devoid of computerization or automation of any kind.' Can we count on IBM to withdraw this patent claim, Bob, or will Big Blue weasel out of its patent reform pledge again?"

Submission + - Comcast Blocking Port 25 1

mlwmohawk writes: In the Boston area many users are having port 25 blocked, incoming and outgoing. How many other people is comcast doing this too?

Test your port 25 and see. If they are blocking you: call 1-800-266-2278 to complain.

If you live in Massachusetts, call the state attorney general on Monday to file a complaint. While port 25 may not be a big deal to many, to some this arbitrary and capricious denial of service without notice or recourse is harmful and should absolutely be something actionable.

Submission + - Using Brain to Remember Songs is Criminal

Shellback3 writes: "NewsTarget, http://www.newstarget.com/022437.html, had a story on New Year's Eve: "RIAA Declares Using Brain to Remember Songs is Criminal Copyright Infringement".

"The brain is a recording device," explained RIAA president Cary Sherman. "The act of listening is an unauthorized act of copying music to that recording device, and the act of recalling or remembering a song is unauthorized playback."

"In order to avoid engaging in unauthorized copyright infringement, consumers will now be required to immediately forget everything they've just heard — a skill already mastered by U.S. President George Bush."

Couldn't wait until April First I guess."
