Submission + - Facebook Shows a Married Woman's Pic in Singles Ad (downloadsquad.com)

suraj.sun writes: Facebook Displays a Married Woman's Pic in Hot Singles Ad to HER Husband :

According to Facebook it's all part of the acceptable use policy you agreed to. No, I'm not kidding. That red box above contains an ad that was displayed to Peter Smith, who no doubt agrees that the woman in the image is hot — although he suspected she wasn't single. You guessed it, that's his wife — consultant Cheryl Smith ( http://www.culturesmithconsulting.com/change-your-facebook-settings-or-else/ ).

Is this not the same Facebook that just went back and retooled a TOS that users found objectionable? Didn't they just finish apologizing and kissing our butts over the crapstorm that ensued?

Here's what the Facebook settings page has to say:

" Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user's friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules. "

All you have to do to prevent this is sign in to Facebook and click through to (get ready) -> Settings -> Privacy -> News Feed and Wall -> Facebook Ads -> Appearance in Facebook Ads and click "no one." Unless, of course, you want to be semifamous and have your picture used to push some garbage product or website without your knowledge.

Feed Engadget: Hello Kitty washing machine won't make your garb any cuter (engadget.com)

Scary how long it's been since we've seen any new gadgetry with Her Cuteness splashed all over it, huh? Or maybe the sight of an actual Hello Kitty washing machine is what's really terrifying. Regardless, Sanrio is now marketing a washer sure to be purchased by only the hardest of hardcore fanatics, and while we've nary a clue what kind of features the unit actually possesses, we won't kid ourselves and suggest that it even matters.Read|Permalink|Email this|Comments

Submission + - HaikuOS - Senryu and the 'Be Man' in Disguise (osnews.com)

bobbycool writes: "Every now and then, the Haiku mailing lists explode with emails about something called the distribution guidelines. The Haiku guys set up a set of guidelines with regards to use of the Haiku trademarks and logos; the "Haiku" name may not be used in the distribution's name, official trademarks and logos must be excluded, but the Haiku icons and artwork may be used. In addition to these cosmetic and trademark issues, the guidelines explain what is needed in order to receive the official "Haiku compatible" logo."

Submission + - Windows XP SP3 Due for Release April 29

spacefiddle writes: "Service Pack 3 for XP is getting a bit of coverage, and the following dates seem to be widely agreed upon:

...Now, according to tech site Neowin, Microsoft's release schedule for XP SP3 is as follows: * April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP * April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers * April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center * June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates
Is this buying extra time to get things right with Vista? Or is Microsoft going to quietly close the gap between EOL for XP and the release of Windows 7?"
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Slashdot Most Overrated Blog According to TIME (time.com) 16

Amit Agarwal writes: "In their annual list of Top 25 blogs, the TIME magazine has added Slashdot to the category of most overrated blogs. The review says — Reading Slashdot these days is like visiting the IT guy at work. He's infuriatingly smug and cares passionately about stuff you don't care about, and views your lack of interest as further confirmation of his intellectual superiority."

Talk to This Year's Quirkiest Senatorial Candidate 364

Not many candidates for the U.S. Senate are 4'9" tall and only have one hand. But Oregon Democrat Steve Novick qualifies on both counts -- and uses them as pluses in his TV ads. Like this one, where he shows why he's the best beer-drinking partner among all the candidates. Or this one, where it's obvious why he's for "the little guy." Also, as far as we know, he's the only candidate this year for any major office who has his own brand of beer. And his online campaign manager is a major Slashdot junkie, too, which is certainly in his favor. But will humor and oddness get Steve into the Senate? We don't know. So ask him. In fact, ask him anything else you'd like about campaigning and politics. He's promised to respond, and seems like the kind of guy who will give interesting answers, at that. (Please follow Slashdot interview rules, as always.)

Man-in-the-Middle Attack on MySpace with Cain 45

Slimjim100 writes "Last year at ChicagoCon 2007, Brian Wilson gave a great talk entitled "Cain & Abel: Windows Can Hack, Too!" Although the presentation and audio recording of the talk can be downloaded from the ChicagoCon site at Library, I had totally forgotten to publish his videos. Just in case things didn't go as planned during the live event or his laptop crapped out on him, Brian made a video of the MITM attack he demonstrated using Cain. You get to see how Myspace and other social networking sites are not designed with security in mind."
