Only because we've killed off most of the things that are dangerous.

Bears (brown moreso than black) will hunt you for food but their range is pretty limited now. Moose, bison, and even elk can be quite dangerous if startled or at the wrong time of the year, but we've killed most of them too.

I'm 25, and I have two decent sized bookshelves worth of dead tree books. It's probably about 1/3 textbooks and technical stuff (including old binders full of papers) and then whatever other novels and nonfiction I've accumulated. The textbooks usually can't be found in a library and a fair portion of the balance is $1 and $2 stuff I've picked up at used book stores or yard sales. I prefer print copies to PDFs. I can scribble in the margins or take it outside with me. I also don't get distracted as much by the wonder of the internet if it's not on a computer.

Submission + - Why don't people work? (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "While there is a multibillion dollar industry out there that tracks every move of the working public, what nonworkers are doing remains somewhat of a mystery, according to the US Census Bureau. Today the agency released an interesting study that looks extensively at why people don't work. For example, for nonworkers 25 to 44 years of age, taking care of children or others was the main reason — 44% — for not working at a paid job. Nearly 2 out of 5 or 38% nonworkers 45 to 54 years old did not work because of a chronic illness or disability. Men nonworkers were more likely than women nonworkers to be retired or going to school. Almost 5% of respondents said they had no interest in work. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/19618"
