Journal Journal: Mac Pro

Last Sunday (January 20, 2008) I purchased a Mac Pro (2x quad 2.8Ghz, 2G ram). I also purchased a 23" cinema display, iPod Touch (16G), iPod Nano (8G), ElGato eyeTV2, 3 applecares and an Airport Extreme card.

This puppy rocks for ripping DvDs. I use MacTheRipper to rip the DvD and then use Handbrake to transcode it into the iPod Touch format. For the Clint Eastwood movie 'A Fist Full of Dollars', the ripping took 15 minutes and the transcoding took 13 minutes.

Journal Journal: New Mac Pros

Yesterday, Apple released new Mac Pros. These appear to be a pretty major update to their product line. I am probably going to get the baseline (2 quad core cpus) with the upgraded video card.

I am planning on traveling to Delaware to purchase this machine as the state of Maryland has just increased the sales tax. Maryland can bite my ass.

Hopefully, I can get this machine next weekend.

The new service, called iTunes Plus, let's you download DRM free music with a higher bitrate at 30 cents a piece more. Currently only EMI music is available in the DRM free AAC 256kbps format, including singles and albums from Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Joss Stone, Pink Floyd, John Coltrane and more than a dozen of Paul McCartney's classic albums. People who have EMI music on their computer can upgrade to the new DRM free format for 30 cents a song or 3 dollars for most albums.."

Submission + - Microsoft Wanted To Drop Mac Office To Hurt Apple

Overly Critical Guy writes: More documents in the Iowa antitrust case have come out. This time, it's revealed that Microsoft considers Mac users its "guinea pigs" for new Office features, and they once considered dropping Mac Office entirely, "as doing so will do a great deal of harm to Apple immediately." This case has become a treasure trove of internal memos describing Microsoft's internal business practices of the last ten years.

Submission + - FAA, DOT Ban Vista Upgrades

An anonymous reader writes: Two goverment agencies is putting a hold on upgrades to Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, Internet Explorer 7, and Office 2007." DOT and the FAA have similar bans in effect. DOT is exploring other options, including Novell's SUSE Linux and, for a subset of users, Apple's Macintosh hardware and software.

I am A internet radio DJ for DNDRadio.com (ddo.mmoradio.com) and i want to bring to your attention that the RIAA is at it again. this time, they are killing internet radio! "direct qoute from our website" The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has announced its decision on Internet Radio royalty rates, rejecting all of the arguments made by Webcasters (an MMORadio) and instead adopting the "per play" rate proposal put forth by SoundExchange (a digital music fee collection body created by the RIAA).

Submission + - Buy Apple shares and get rich?

Jan writes: "An interesting post about Apple stocks appeared today on profit42.com titled "Buy Apple shares and get rich?". With WWDC07 coming in June the Apple stocks are likely to explode, or is there something we forget. The article starts with a fact: "If you bought an Apple share at Jun 14, 2006 for the market price of only $50 because you knew that Apple was going to release some cool things on WWDC 2006 (August the seventh 2006) and you could sell it today for $86 and make 72% profit in half a year!". But is it wise to sell your shares now? And if you don't have any, do you need to buy? Let's start the discussion in the comments and keep this list of points (quoted from profit42's article) in your mind while typing:

— WWDC07 will be held from June 11-15
— On this conference Apple will most likely introduce a new Dual Quadcore Mac Pro
— and a new line of ultraportable notebooks (tablets?)
— and Leopard
— and the iPhone will start shipping

— Windows Vista is overhyped at the moment and soon everyone will realize that OSX performs better for daily computer use.
— Windows Vista is overpriced
— Zune, anyone? The new Zune has been a disaster
— Apple has the best ads ever: People go to apple.com site to see the ads in their spare time!
— Microsoft ads? Can't remember one... (well, maybe those running on a Macbook).

— The iPhone, yeah, it's cool, but does anyone want to pay $499 + a two year contract for a first gen Apple phone?
— The Dual Quad Core will be out of reach for 90% of the people on this earth.
— People that bought won' switch to OSX in the next few years and most people that didn't/won't upgrade are to scared to switch to OSX.
— Ultra Portable's? That sounds expensive and slow...."
