Submission + - Climate change consensus questioned? (senate.gov)

buddyglass writes: In 2004 Naomi Oreskes examined 928 abstracts of peer-reviewed journal articles published from 1993-2003 and announced an overwhelming agreement in favor of the "consensus view" of climate change, which states that human activity bears at least partial responsibility. Her methods were recently repeated by one Dr. Klaus-Martin Schulte, who examined 528 abstracts of peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2004-2007. Dr. Schulte's study found that 45% of articles agreed with the consensus view, either explicitly or implicitly, whereas 6% explicitly disagreed. Another 48% were explicitly neutral, refusing to support or deny the consensus view. Does this draw into question the notion that there is an unequivocal consensus among climate change researchers with regard to human activity's effect on the global climate?

Submission + - DIRECTV freaks out and blocks everything (typepad.com) 1

eagl writes: It seems as if DIRECTV has jumped on the DRM bandwagon in a big way. Wil Wheaton finds himself with 57 channels (plus or minus a few hundred) and nothing on, quite literally. Is the inevitable result of forcing restrictive standards that do not benefit consumers?

Submission + - Climate change science; taking a closer look. (senate.gov)

fyngyrz writes: "Climate change, global warming. Done deal, right? Not so fast:

A study has been submitted for publication in the journal Energy and Environment which actually looks at the level of support in the scientific community. From the results: "Of 528 total papers on climate change, only 38 (7%) gave an explicit endorsement of the consensus. If one considers "implicit" endorsement (accepting the consensus without explicit statement), the figure rises to 45%. However, while only 32 papers (6%) reject the consensus outright, the largest category (48%) are neutral papers, refusing to either accept or reject the hypothesis." It is very interesting to see how neutral (and properly so!) the scientific community actually remains when it comes to anthropocentric global warming.

Are we seeing the pendulum swing back to a rational position?"

Submission + - Detective claims virus's don't download porn

An anonymous reader writes: I ran across a news article about a Oregon Detective that says: http://www.gazettetimes.com/articles/2007/08/25/ne ws/community/1aaa03_computer.txt Sometimes defendants blame a "magic pornography downloading computer virus" for child pornography found in their computer, Posler said. But there is no such thing, according to Posler, and even if there were, it couldn't make folders to save favorite images and catalogue them." Granted he talking about child pornography but, the statement is still to broad. I couldn't believe what I was reading! I worked in the computer repair industry for many years and I cleaned up thousands of Windows based systems. I've seen many virus's, Trojans and Zombies that create folders and download porn, malicious programs, spyware, nukers ect. I can't help but, wonder how many lives are dependent on this type of misinformation. How many of our nations experts are like this? Or is that state the exception? Thank you
