Submission + - Amazon EBS failure brings down Reddit, Imgur, others (networkworld.com) 1

BButlerNWW writes: "Amazon Web Services has confirmed that its Elastic Block Storage (EBS) service is experiencing degraded service, leading sites across the Internet to experience downtime, including Reddit, Imgur and many others.

AWS confirmed on its status page at 2:11 p.m. ET that it is experiencing "degraded performance for a small number of EBS volumes." It says the issue is restricted to a single Availability Zone within the US-East-1 Region, which is in Northern Virginia. AWS later reported that its Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) and its Elastic Beanstalk application plaform also experienced failures on Monday afternoon."

The poster you are referring to is using quite a lot of profanity. This indicates a weak mind. It also is something that Mr. Romney doesn't believe in doing. Neither does Mr. Obama. You may dislike one, or both of them, but, they are at least publicly decent men.

This is just the usual High School and Jr. College "Liberal" Brain Dead Stunts. The person wants to insult someone he/she has been told by a teacher they should dislike, for no appreciable reason, so they make stupid stuff up.

A real Liberal would of course defend the rights of any one they differed with politically. Those who act differently, like Harry Reid, are fake Liberals.

The problem is that they are probably just as stupid on the job. That can create situations where people's lives may be put in danger.

Really, it is a very sad commentary on the United States, Almost as bad as the writers for MSNBC. Even the Huffington Post knows that MSNBC just makes stuff up.

Comment About Management (Score 1) 418

Don't worry if you failed at Management. You couldn't program very well the first time you sat down at a terminal either.

Management takes a different skill set. That's all.

Take a Dale Carnegie Course, read up on basic accounting, and read a book on business management. But, most of all, look at the people you are to supervise, and ask yourself if you can help them.

Toastmasters will also help you. Look for a club.

Managers have to report regularly. Managers also need to keep tabs on what the people below them are doing. Keeping tabs means that they have to have at least a low level ability to do what the people who report to them are doing. So, look for instructional materials on the technologies and systems that your area is using. Failing a few times, with a few people is just part of the learning process.

So, don't be afraid to fail, but Do look for reasons why the failure occurred and avoid that next time.

Also, remember that a good manager helps train the people under him. If you can't help them grow, or if you have not got someone who can replace you, at least partially, then you are not doing your job.

If YOUR Boss isn't willing to help you with these things, then, you are in a sacrificial position.

So, good luck with it all.

But remember, Technology is a rapidly changing field. Whatever you are doing now, it will be obsolete within five years. If you are tired of learning new stuff, then it's time to get a sales job. If you do find excitement in learning new things, then keep at what you are doing now.

The Courts

Submission + - Could Selling Your Computer One Day Be a Criminal Offense? (zeropaid.com)

Dangerous_Minds writes: The Atlantic is reporting that the Supreme Court will decide later this year whether or not re-selling a product that is manufactured outside the US could be a violation of copyright law. Apparently, a lower court ruled that this would be a violation of copyright law due to the wording of first-sale doctrine. Demand Progress is not happy about this saying that sites like Craigslist and eBay will be undermined should the Supreme Court agree with the lower court ruling. ZeroPaid is wondering: if the Supreme Court agrees with the lower courts ruling and the TPP is later ratified, could that mean that selling things like your personal computer one day be a criminal offense?

Saying NYT made an incorrect calculation and explaining why is fine. But what was Apple's tax rate, then?

We won't know until the actual profits are calculated at the end of the trading year, when Apple pays the remaining balance.

If you can't answer that, then you can't say the figure itself is incorrect, only the means used to arrive at it.

What?! Yes, you can. Because it was derived from 2010's, it doesn't reflect what Apple's actual tax rate will be for its 2011 profits, which were much higher than 2010's. Therefore, the figure is totally useless.

If you have a vested financial interest in PHP, it's understandable that you'd have a desire to defend your source of income, but it doesn't change the fact that PHP is objectively a terrible language. PHP's creator has publicly stated that he is not a programmer and is not interested in being one, that he didn't set out to create a programming language, and so forth.

When I see people defending PHP, I have the same reaction I get when I see Scientologists defending a religion started by a science fiction author.

I think Google's constant 2012 controversies have caused fans to go into a meltdown around here.
