Submission + - Opensource Traffic Light Cufflinks (cuffelink.com)

bmsleight writes: "Just finished my latest project. I have always liked cufflinks, apart from my wedding ring it is the only form of jewellery that I wear. Inside each cufflink, I have a ATTINY45, a Real Time Clock chip, a couple of resistors and three LEDs. Each cufflink can display a normal UK Traffic light Sequence, a normal UK Pelican Crossing Sequence, the current time, date and even the temperature. All the hardware and software is open source."

Submission + - London Hacked Its Own Traffic Lights to Make Sure It Got the Olympics (vanityfair.com)

Submission + - Best tablet for running a real GNU/Linux distribut 2

bmsleight writes: Android is nice, but I do not want to pay to print or be beholden to the cloud to do everything or chroot. I just want a tablet that can run as mythtv-client, OpenOffice.org and not a app-market but just good old apt-get. I have a Joggler — which costs £60, I like something like this with batteries for ~£150, with screen size 10.1", at least 802.11g, usb, minimal on board storage, large RAM, battery life less important. So what is the best tablet for running a real GNU/Linux distribution, ideally Debian. Bonus points for the best apt-get-able distribution that works with a tablet.

Submission + - How to make money with free software (barwap.com)

bmsleight writes: "The Dutch Ministry of Finance organized an architecture competition not to design a building, but the new 5 euro commemorative coin with the theme 'Netherlands and Architecture'. The winning design made with 100% with free software, mainly Python. The design is amazing, the Queens head is made up of names of the architects based upon the occurrences in a yahoo searches. In the end the artist Stani Michiels had to collaborate closely on location together with the technicians of the Royal Dutch Mint (coin factory). So all the last bits were done his Asus Eee PC, which took 30 seconds instead of 3 seconds to generate a whole coin. So soon 350.000 Dutch people will use the fruits of free software."

The two CDs were send by internal mail, using a plain password, the data was not encrypted.
