Submission + - Dutch justice ban access to internet ban list (tweakers.net) 1

Askmum writes: The Dutch justice department has created an "internet filter" to prevent access to child porn sites. But it will not disclose which sites are on the list, making it unclear if there may be other sites banned too. The reason given for not disclosing the list is because "the justice department has no access to this information". Makes you wonder who controlls this list then.
And it makes you think of the Australian internet ban list, which featured a lot of unrelated sites.

Submission + - All-electric Cri-Cri has maiden flight (generalaviationnews.com)

rootnl writes: The all electric Cri-Cri, jointly developed by EADS Innovation Works, Aero Composites Saintonge and the Green Cri-Cri Association, made its official maiden flight at Le Bourget airport near Paris on Thursday, Sept.

"The aerobatic plane incorporates numerous technologies such as lightweight composite structures that reduce the weight of the airframe and compensate for the additional weight of the batteries, four brushless electric motors with counter-rotating propellers that deliver propulsion without CO2 emissions and significantly lower noise compared to thermal propulsion, and high energy-density Lithium batteries."

Lets hope the it doesn't sound like its name.

Submission + - Valve Hiring to Port Windows Games to Linux (valvesoftware.com) 3

mrbojangles_dcfc writes: crimsonheadGCN over at NeoGaf has highlighted that whilst we were told by Valve just a few weeks ago that there is no Linux version of Steam in development, they are looking to hire a Senior Software Engineer who will have to "Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform." as part of their responsibilities.

Gran Turismo 5 Delayed 122

RogueyWon writes "The Times is reporting that Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5, likely to prove a key title for the PlayStation 3, has been delayed indefinitely, despite an expectation that it would be released relatively early in 2010. The delay seems likely to impact Sony's plans to bundle the game with the PlayStation 3 console in time for the important spring sales period in Japan."

Submission + - Amazon Wants Patent for Inserting Ads into Books

theodp writes: "Three Amazon inventors set out to correct what they felt was a real problem — i.e., that "out-of-print or rare books...typically do not include advertisements...the content is fixed and, therefore, has not been adapted to modern marketing." Their solution is spelled out in newly-disclosed Amazon patent applications for On-Demand Generating E-Book Content with Advertising and Incorporating Advertising in On-Demand Generated Content. From the patent apps, here's what the future of reading may look like: "For instance, if a restaurant is described on page 12 of the requested printed content 114, the advertisement page image 116 next to page 12, i.e., either on page 11 or page 13, may include advertisements about restaurants, wine, food, etc., which are related to restaurants and dining." So what would a delightfully-tacky-yet-unrefined Hooters ad do for your Hemingway experience?"

Comment Hardware (Score 1) 1365

Some of the big problems are wifi, bluetooth, sound and video related. Most of these problems are a result of proprietary drivers/hardware. I have problems with bluetooth that my keyboard won't connect after a reboot. Configuring the spdif raw output is a pain(eventually got it running properly with a custom .asound configuration). Cheaper sound cards only support one channel, thus causing one application to block another (there are workarounds, but even for the tech-savvy this is a pain). Video support, you are at the mercy of the hardware.

For me, Linux is ready for the desktop, it's just that some hardware's not ready for Linux.

GTA IV DLC Announced 49

Rockstar Games recently announced upcoming downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV, entitled The Lost and Damned. It's due out on February 17th, and it focuses on a member of a Liberty City biker gang, rather than Niko Bellic. Joystiq has some early screenshots. "In the original game, Niko crossed paths with The Lost several times. This time, Niko has only a bit part, [Rockstar's Dan Houser] says. 'The story is not directly impacted by decisions you took in the main game,' he says. But 'tons of details and mysteries from the main story get explained, so it will add a lot of color to the main story.'"

Submission + - Microsoft unleashes perverted Santabot on children

ShieldW0lf writes: Microsoft has been encouraging children to chat with "Santa" by adding northpole@live.com to their contact lists. The bot would pretend to be Santa, asking what they want for Christmas and replying intelligently.

Until, one fateful day, a young girl invited Santa to eat pizza too many times, only to have Santa say "You want me to eat what?!? It's fun to talk about oral sex, but I want to chat about something else."

Microsoft spokesman Adam Sohn said the company's engineers tried to clean up Santa's vocabulary, but even after making changes to the software, the company wasn't comfortable keeping him online.
