Submission + - What Turned Jaron Lanier Against the Web (

i_want_you_to_throw_ writes: "Details of Jaron Lanier's crusade against Web 2.0 continues in an article at Smithsonian Magazine. The article, entitled "What Turned Jaron Lanier Against the Web" continues Lanier's rant against Web 2.0. It's a mostly interesting read with Lanier suggesting we are outsourcing ourselves into insignificant advertising-fodder and making an audacious connection between techno-utopianism, the rise of the machines and the Great Recession."

I hope the Pi is the Apple in this comparison. Orange Pi sounds disgusting.

Well try this!

Orange Pie
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
3 egg yolks, beaten
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 cup orange juice
3 egg whites
6 tablespoons white sugar
1 large orange, sliced in rounds

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (225 degrees C).
2. In a medium bowl, beat together egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar until mixture is thick and lemon-colored. Add flour, melted butter, grated orange rind, and orange juice. Mix thoroughly, then pour into pastry shell.
3. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake an additional 25 minutes, until custard is set.
4. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 6 tablespoons sugar, continuing to beat until whites form stiff peaks. Spread meringue over pie, covering completely. Return to oven for 10 minutes, until meringue is golden brown. Cool before serving. Garnish with orange slices.

Maybe a fellow Marylander can help me out with this: if we are truly a democracy, why can't there be a state referendum to either vote Yay or Nay on these cameras? Where I live in Montgomery County it seems like there are speed cameras every mile or so. Would it REALLY be that tough to just have them removed? Seems like a no brainer that you could definitely get the signatures to put it up for a vote.

After all, "Juan Valdez" is a complete marketing dynasty. So effective that people actually think that Colombian coffee actually ** IS ** the richest in the world (it's not, Kona richer). In Colombia there are Juan Valdez coffee shops, etc. More power to them.

If you spent that much time in financial institutions, the think about Urbana, Maryland. Banner Life has a data center there, as well as Fannie Mae, and the Social Security Administration is moving a data center there. It's pretty good bucks, but far enough outside the DC metro area to be at least reasonable. Just an idea.

Submission + - Apple Abandons Green Certification (

i_want_you_to_throw_ writes: "Technology giant Apple is catching heat on blogs this week for its decision to drop out of an environmental certification program for electronics, called EPEAT. There's speculation that Apple's new line of "retina display" laptops aren't easily recyclable because their batteries are glued to the aluminum case on the computer. This decision is already costing Apple with the city of San Francisco deciding to no longer buy Apple computers. San Francisco also has a rule on the books prohibiting the city from purchasing desktop and laptop computers that are not EPEAT-certified, so the city will not be able to purchase Apple desktops and laptops unless Apple gets the green certification again."

We're surprisingly cutting edge in some agencies, I make six figures and I have more opportunity. I have no desire to do project management, etc etc. I just like to develop.

You can also go through good ole Usenet which has faster speeds than peer to peer like EasyNews. Happy torrenting!
