I understand the comment about opportunity cost and inflation. I bought a used minivan two years ago for cash. I have a solid credit rating and qualified for a low rate. I forgot what the rate was, but it was still > 1% more than I could get with any type of cash based investment. The cash based investment options included locking money into a 4 year CD.
I agree with the having cash and if investments are earning more than the loan costs, take the loan. Given the volatility of the financial markets these days, there is also merit to buy used (i.e. cheaper) and paying cash.
