Submission + - Jobs using Audio Engineering and C++? 1

I have slowly come to terms that my Bachelor's degree in audio engineering is not getting me very far. I originally had aspirations of working in the recording industry, but it has dwindled over the past decade. I am in my mid-twenties and I am trying to figure out if learning c++(or any other programming language) could benefit me. Are there any jobs, or more importantly career paths, combining the two fields? If so, what approach should I take?

An anonymous reader writes: If you ask Linux users what the smallest distribution out there is for a USB stick install or just to start playing around with, they’d probably suggest Damn Small Linux (DSL). DSL is a very versatile Linux distribution including a range of useful apps in 50MB. But it isn’t the smallest.

Tiny Core Linux is a complete Linux GUI desktop solution in just 11MB. Unlike DSL though, this is about as minimal as it gets, with no installed apps, just a menu and a link to a huge list of apps you may want to install. For the Linux pro it means a completely blank sheet where you only add what you want to be productive.

As a productivity OS it may just be perfect if you set it up with a focus on apps that you need. If you want a Internet browsing solution it’s a great choice too and immune to many of the Windows-focused threats on the web.

These tactics may well be pushing many IT pros to go job hunting, Computerworld's latest salary poll has found. More than one third (36%) of the 343 respondents to a recent poll said they are looking to move to a new employer in the next six months. And 69% reported they had not received a pay raise in the past six months. The poll was conducted during the last two weeks in September. For employers, the warning could not be more clear. As the economy improves, the most able IT workers may leave for something better.

porcinist writes: On June 23rd NASA successfully tested hardware and software on an Armadillo Rocket. With the end of NASA's Constellation program in sight, NASA is starting to focus on new, innovative exploration programs like Project-M. This project is meant to land a robotic humanoid on the moon in a thousand days. To meet this goal NASA teamed with Armadillo Aerospace and Draper Labs (The lab responsible for creating the original Apollo Guidance Computer) to integrate and flight test a real-time navigation system in only 7 weeks. This might be the fastest thing NASA has done in 30 years. Maybe NASA is taking Obama's new vision to heart.

I can't help but get a little nauseous.

What is coffee? Coffee is heated water strained through the ground up remains of dead, chemically treated vegetative matter that's traveled thousands of miles from who knows where via who knows what method peed on by who knows how many rats along the way and packaged for our consumption? Count me out.

I'll take a can of good ole sugared up naturally and artificially flavored soda any day.

Kundra served as the Chief Technology Officer for the Government of the District of Columbia and was voted the 2008 IT Executive of the Year. Kundra will direct technology ventures for US agencies and will "play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most secure, open, and efficient way possible," according to a statement from the President."

Polar Star writes "Retrocrush reports that Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are back making fun of crappy movies again in a new incarnation called The Film Crew. In the first of many new DVDs to be released, they take on a 1969 abomination called Hollywood After Dark which features a still-not-very-young Rue McClanahan as a down-on-her-luck actress who becomes a stripper. Needless to say, it's one of the scariest movies you'll ever see. There's plenty of funny jokes throughout, and they definitely prove themselves worthy of carrying on the MST3K tradition." Update 1925 GMT by SM: Corrected a few oversights and pointed to The Film Crew's actual website.

Bonker writes: While Blizzard is certainly king of the MMO empire at the moment, it worth noting that Cryptic Studios has released the tenth free expansion to its popular comic-book themed MMO, 'City Of Heroes/City of Villains'. 'Issue 10: Invasion' sees Heroes and Villains alike defending their cities against attack from the alien Rikti. The expansion has a lot of new content, including a revamped co-op zone for Heroic and Villainous players to take the fight to the aliens. It also includes large-scale city-wide air-raids in which players can fight against spaceship bombers and teleporting alien invaders. Despite the 'large-scale' nature of the event, it's been coded so that it scales with the players attending. Solo-players can fight against the aliens just as well as team-oriented players. If you're not playing 'City Of' right now, you're really missing out on one of the most fun, most dynamic MMO gameplay experiences around.
