0xbl00d writes: "According to a report on eweek.com, there's a new Microsoft Word zero-day attack underway. Microsoft issued a security advisory to acknowledge the unpatched flaw, which affects Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac and Microsoft Word 2004 v. X for Mac. The Microsoft Works 2004, 2005 and 2006 suites are also affected because they include Microsoft Word.

Simply opening a word document will launch the exploit. There are no pre-patch workarounds or anti-virus signatures available. Microsoft suggests that users "not open or save Word files," even from trusted sources."

So, the other day, a RL female friend of mine indicated that she may consider getting her assets augmented. She asked for my feedback as to whether guys had a strong preference.

I had to admit that I have no basis to judge, lacking an augmented volunteer to play adjust the radio with. :-(

However, I thought it might be more interesting that the current questionaire meme going around. If you're a guy: Real or Memorex? Do you care?

zxnos writes: "In a bold move McDonald's has filed a patent for a "method and apparatus for making a sandwich". I am pretty sure I have heard of these "sandwiches" before.

A choice sample of the article: A "bread component" is then placed over the cavity and the assembly tool "inverted" to tip out the contents. "Typically, a sandwich filling will thereafter be placed in the bread component," the 55-page patent explains. "Often the sandwich filling is the source of the name of the sandwich, for example — ham sandwich.""

He suggests that our leaders would be less inclined to propose war if their own kids were possibly sent to war also. From the article: "New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars. He believes a draft would bolster U.S. troop levels that are currently insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said."

linuxghoul writes: "The Daily Bruin, UCLAs campus newspaper reports that an Iranian student at UCLA was taserd multiple times by campus police when he could not produce is ID during a random check at the UCLA library. There are cell-phone videos (on youtube, amongst showing the police officers delivering him multiple shocks, once even while the student was already handcuffed. At one point, a bystander asks one of the officers for his badge number, and the officer threatens him with the taser as well.
While LATimes seems to have woken up to this news item now that a probe has been ordered, CNN still seems totally oblivious. Heck, searching for news on "taser" on CNN website leads to a whole bunch of ads for places that sell tasers. CNN does have space on its home page for a story on OJS but considers a student being taserd by campus police unworthy to even make it to its website.
Whatever happened to reasonable force? The student was clearly unarmed, and was no threat to four police officers. Whatever happened to nonviolent resistance? While we argue about the rights to bear arms, even the right to stand up for our rights non violently has already started to erode away. Yes, we are late for 1984, but we are catching up FAST."

Submission + - New Microsoft CLI doesn't rate a /. article?

Simulant writes: Come on guys... this is arguably more important than Vista's release to Windows sys admins.

Windows PowerShell 1.0 is now available. It's a massive improvement over the old command prompt and is available for XP and Windows Server 2003, as well as Vista.

If the object oriented environment doesn't suit you, you'll still want this if for no other reasons than you can now 'cd' into UNC paths and use backs slashes & forward slashes interchangeably in path names. Tons of other good stuff including regex support.

This is most definitely worth a discussion on Slashdot.
