7 of the Best Free Linux Calculators 289

An anonymous reader writes "One of the basic utilities supplied with any operating system is a desktop calculator. These are often simple utilities that are perfectly adequate for basic use. They typically include trigonometric functions, logarithms, factorials, parentheses and a memory function. However, the calculators featured in this article are significantly more sophisticated with the ability to process difficult mathematical functions, to plot graphs in 2D and 3D, and much more. Occasionally, the calculator tool provided with an operating system did not engender any confidence. The classic example being the calculator shipped with Windows 3.1 which could not even reliably subtract two numbers. Rest assured, the calculators listed below are of precision quality."

Facebook Master Password Was "Chuck Norris" 319

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "A Facebook employee has given a tell-all interview with some very interesting things about Facebook's internals. Especially interesting are all the things relating to Facebook privacy. Basically, you don't have any. Nearly everything you've ever done on the site is recorded into a database. While they fire employees for snooping, more than a few have done it. There's an internal system to let them log into anyone's profile, though they have to be able to defend their reason for doing so. And they used to have a master password that could log into any Facebook profile: 'Chuck Norris.' Bruce Schneier might be jealous of that one."

Comment ATT can suck T-Mobile's fleshy cell tower. (Score 1) 395

After being on ATT for 7 years, my bill started fluctuating wildly from $60 to $100 even though I wasn't doing anything different from previous billing periods.

After I called ATT and sat on the phone with them for two hours, a representative told me they were "singling out my blackberry plan" and could do nothing about the issue. I gave up, walked into T-mobile while I still had an ATT rep on the phone and let them know I was going to get more minutes and a cheaper plan.

This was three days ago and i think I'm going to call ATT and waste some more of their time while officially closing my account.

On a similar note, my roommates all have ATT and hate their coverage and service. Another friend goes so far as to call her phone an imnotaPhone. ATT service is so bad, they have a piece of software that allows customers to help map out and complain about where the service is bad. They also claim that an 80% success rate on connecting calls is good. Cricket, AllTell, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, smokesignals, homing pidgeons, and morse code all beat ATT. Do yourself a favor, go with anyone but ATT.

Own Your Own Fighter Jet 222

gimmebeer writes "The Russian Sukhoi SU-27 has a top speed of Mach 1.8 (more than 1,300 mph) and has a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1 to 1. That means it can accelerate while climbing straight up. It was designed to fight against the best the US had to offer, and now it can be yours for the price of a mediocre used business jet."

Spectrum of Light Captured From Distant World 32

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Cosmos: "Astronomers have made the first direct capture of a spectrum of light from a planet outside the Solar System and are deciphering its composition. The light was snared from a giant planet that orbits a bright young star called HR 8799 about 130 light-years from Earth, said the European Southern Observatory (ESO). ... The find is important, because hidden within a light spectrum are clues about the relative amounts of different elements in the planet's atmosphere. 'The features observed in the spectrum are not compatible with current theoretical models,' said co-author Wolfgang Brandner. 'We need to take into account a more detailed description of the atmospheric dust clouds, or accept that the atmosphere has a different chemical composition from that previously assumed.' The result represents a milestone in the search for life elsewhere in the universe, said the ESO. Until now, astronomers have been able to get only an indirect light sample from an exoplanet, as worlds beyond our Solar System are called. They do this by measuring the spectrum of a star twice — while an orbiting exoplanet passes near to the front of it, and again while the planet is directly behind it. The planet's spectrum is thus calculated by subtracting one light sample from another."

*The 800x480 screen resolution.

*FM Transmitter for wireless stereo access.

*Internal storage is 32GB, plus the microSD slot adds another 16GB of capacity (soon to be 32GB, when sandisk releases 32GB micro sdhc cards)

*Flash support with a real browser

*24 fps video Most importantly though, IT'S NOT AN APPLE PRODUCT!
