Comment Re:Accenture wrote it? (Score 1) 245

Never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained by stupidity... Doubling, tripling; sounds to me like it could be explained by an untrained operator not receiving feedback that an operation has been completed, and so clicking again on the button which initiates the operation.

Other things being equal, a simpler explanation is better than a more complex one. It's a Cartesian select. The real question is why only certain precincts are affected.

Really? How about the artists who produced the 11,000 songs on her hard drive? Someone going in to the music business certainly values it enough to pay for it (although there are legal and ethical ways that she didn't use that would give her to access almost that same library of music for free.)

Look, I get it, her copyright infringement shouldn't be the impetus for increasingly draconian copyright laws (SOPA/PIPA) or result in soul crushing lawsuits (Jammie Thomas-Rasset,) but neither should such wanton infringement be acceptable. Lowery needs to get his head out of his ass when it comes to new business models in music, but he's right to say that it's wrong to rip hundreds of CDs you don't own.

I was expecting to roll my eyes at another Lowery anti-new-music-business screed, but after reading the intern's post, I'm kind of on David's side. 11,000 songs of mostly ripped CD's from her family, friends, and work? She's exactly the type of pirate Lowery always assumes everyone is defending, and it's right that she's being called out for it.

Submission + - Adobe takes on Microsoft role in eBook market (computerworld.com)

ericatcw writes: Barnes & Noble, Sony and other e-book vendors may have the manufacturing muscle, but the brains directing the challenge against Amazon.com's Kindle eBook Reader is Adobe Systems. Like Microsoft, Adobe has built a formidable ecosystem of partners to whom it supplies software such as its encryption/DRM-creating Adobe Content Server. Adobe paints Amazon as being like Apple: secretive and playing badly with others. Amazon argues it just ain't so, and takes a jab, along with other critics, at Adobe's alleged open-ness.

Jetman Attempts Intercontinental Flight 140

Last year we ran the story of Yves Rossy and his DIY jetwings. Yves spent $190,000 and countless hours building a set of jet-powered wings which he used to cross the English Channel. Rossy's next goal is to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, from Tangier in Morocco and Tarifa on the southwestern tip of Spain. From the article: "Using a four-cylinder jet pack and carbon fibre wings spanning over 8ft, he will jump out of a plane at 6,500 ft and cruise at 130 mph until he reaches the Spanish coast, when he will parachute to earth." Update 18:57 GMT: mytrip writes: "Yves Rossy took off from Tangiers but five minutes into an expected 15-minute flight he was obliged to ditch into the wind-swept waters."

Submission + - Energy Transitions Past and Future (theoildrum.com)

Prof. Goose writes: "
This is a guest post from Cutler Cleveland. Professor Cleveland is a Professor at Boston University and has been researching and writing on energy issues for over 20 years.

In the coming decades, world oil production will peak and then begin to decline, followed by natural gas and eventually coal production. There is considerable debate about when these peaks will occur because such information would greatly aid energy companies, policy makers, and the general public. But at another level, the timing of peak fossil fuel production doesn't really matter. A more fundamental issue is the magnitude and nature of the energy transition that will eventually occur. The next energy transition undoubtedly will have far reaching impacts just as fire and fossil fuels did. However, the next energy transition will occur under a very different set of conditions, which are the subject of the rest of this discussion.
