Journal Journal: Cell Phone Hunt Update 2

Well I went and played with phones at VZ.

I like the LG VX8550 (Chocolate Rev.2) thought the scroll wheel feels a little chintzy, I wish they had added more weight/resistance to it. A lot of people are comparing the scroll wheel to the first gen iPods but I am not sure I ever had the opportunity to play with one.

I also like the LG VX8700, it's a nice clamshell design, supports more Bluetooth features like Bluetooth File Transfer, however it isn't free. :-\

Any advice?

Cellphones

Journal Journal: Cell Phone Help 5

So I am in the market for a new cell phone. I am eligible for a deep discount on the Verizon network starting Tuesday. I currently have a MOTO RAZR V3c which I have never been to enamored of, it works, the form factor is okay, the battery sucks.

I've never had a slider before, a friend has one of the shiny 2nd generation LG Chocolate VX8550 that she likes so far.

I'm not a big texter, and until phones start coming with SSH clients I don't anticipate needing a QWERTY keyboard. I have no interest in the VZ TV or Navigator thing. Bluetooth is a must, I love being able to sync my address book and have the phone plugged in while I wander around my kitchen on a bluetooth headset. I'd also like a phone that did OBEX (unlikely on VZ from what I can tell) or had removable media so I can actually use the camera in the phone, but this is not a requirement as I generally carry my little ELPH with me.

Any recomendations, horror stories, etc?

The Internet

Journal Journal: Apache and mod_rewrite 1

I wish apache had a mechanism to use mod_rewrite without having to have a vhost for each domain that you want to redirect. At the moment I have this defined in each vhost I want to redirect:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} domain.org$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://server.domain.edu/$1 [R]

Am I missing something obvious?

Journal Journal: last.fm borked? [Working now]

Is last.fm borked? I tried two clients with a couple of different options, but nothing appears to be getting updated today. Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: not sure what it was, but arount 1720EST my entire days backlog filled in. Go figure.

Journal Journal: "Opinion Center" 3

So slashdot has replaced the "Vendors" section pushing AMD with an (uncollapsable) section called "Opinion Center" pushing Intel? And what's with making the section in the navigation bar a different color? And why's it at the top of the bar.
Seriously "Vendors" was at least forthright about what it actually was, a slashvertisement.
Ugg, annoying.

Wireless Networking

Journal Journal: Linux Wireless help - Half-Height Card Selection 2

I need to find a PCI wireless card that will work with linux (OpenSuSE 10, not my choice). Now normally this wouldn't be THAT hard, except it is a Dell Optiplex GX240, you know the slim black ones that probably sit on all of you secretary'sadministrative assistant's desks, thus I need a so called "half-height" card.
So anyone out there have suggestions, I am NOT looking to use NdisWrapper. Any suggestions?
Has anyone used mad-wifi recently? They list the "3Com® Wireless 11a/b/g PCI Adapter" as the only supported half-height card.

Programming

Journal Journal: [programming] Help learning Fortran 1

Okay, I need to pick up Fortan, 70, 90, 95, doesn't matter, need to pick up Fortran in some form to maintain and adapt some code. (it too is a mix of code from different standards)

Any suggestions? Someone out there must still be playing with this stuff!

"Pay no attention to my musings" is this how we post to our journals now?

Journal Journal: rsync for Windows? 2

I am looking for an rsync client for Windows, any suggestions? This is for family members who I have yet to convert to the Cult of Mac. I know about cwRsync, but I am looking for something more akin to WinSCP which I currently have them using. Some are on flaky DSL connections so a protocol that could resume would be preferable to straight SCP.

Journal Journal: Journal Cirlclers in Iceland?

Well I have landed in Vestmannaeyjar, got the ferry across from orlákshöfn at noon GMT. Flew in from Boston to Keflavik overnight. Rented a car and drove to the south coast. We didn't even get lost once. We looked at the boats for hire and have decided to use a tugboat to recover our glider, rather than the 8m research boat we had planned on.
It looks like we may have caught a break in the weather, we should be able to get the glider tomorrow, although it is now west of the island where we had wanted to bring it up east of the island, it's in very shallow water right now, and his hit the bottom a number of times. In any case we may have a little time to kill on the end of our trip, we fly back Sunday. Any journal circlers in Reyjavik, or recommendations on things to do?

Journal Journal: Firehose? Did I miss this

So went to the /. front page and saw a new button in the header; FireHose. Is this new, did I miss it? Did I miss dozens of JEs about this?
For those that can't see it, it appears to be a look into the story queue that allows tagging and primitive voting "thumbs up"/"thumbs down". I "printed" a PDF of the page, and here is a screenshot for everyone else. Funny the 5 page PDF is half the size of the PNG screenshot.

Oh, and you gotta love "hose@cmdrtaco.net"

Journal Journal: Plan B OTC

The FDA has finally approved Plan B as an over the counter medication after more than 3 years of debate! You have to be over 18 to buy it, but it's still a step in the right direction, fewer abortions and more choices here we come!
