Submission + - Web Hosting Code of Ethical Conduct (thoughtbug.com)

mind21_98 writes: "With the closure of Web hosts on a daily basis, and the high-profile closure of jatol.com, many people are left stranded without Web sites. This doesn't have to happen! I wrote up a series of rules that all legitimate companies that provide Web hosting services should support and follow. Together, we can make sure that no person is ever held hostage by their Web host again."

Journal Journal: The Social Causes Project 2

I recently started a Web hosting/software business. As a ten-year veteran of the Internet, I've watched it change everything about our world. But there are some people that are unable to take advantage of the potential for social change. Enter The Social Causes Project. Basically, I'm offering reduced-cost (or even free) hosting and help to deserving causes who cannot take advantage of

The World's Longest Tunnel 563

fusconed writes "Bloomberg reports that the Russian government is proposing to build an underground tunnel between Russia and Alaska for transporting goods, electricity and natural resources. The tunnel would be twice as long as that between the UK and France. The $10 — $12b cost is not something to be overlooked, but Russia claims the benefits would pay it off in 20 years. It would take 10 to 15 years to build, but being an Alaskan, it sounds good to me!"

The Virtual Teacher 94

Roland Piquepaille writes "Researchers from Illinois and Florida are developing a networking system which will create virtual representations of real people to improve our knowledge. They will use artificial intelligence and natural language processing software to enable us to interact with these avatars. The goal of the project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is to give us the possibility to interact with these virtual representations as if they were the actual person, complete with the ability to understand and answer questions. We should see the results at the beginning of 2008 — if the researchers succeed."

Navy Gets 8-Megajoule Rail Gun Working 650

prototypo writes "The Free Lance-Star newspaper is reporting that the Navy Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia has successfully demonstrated an 8-megajoule electromagnetic rail gun. A 32-megajoule version is due to be tested in June. A 64-megajoule version is anticipated to extend the range of naval gunfire (currently about 15 nautical miles for a 5-inch naval gun) to more than 200 nautical miles by 2020. The projectiles are small, but go so fast that have enough kinetic punch to replace a Tomahawk missile at a fraction of the cost. In the final version, they will apex at 95 miles altitude, well into space. These systems were initially part of Reagan's SDI program ("Star Wars"). An interesting tidbit in the article is that the rail gun is only expected to fire ten times or less per day, presumably because of the amount of electricity needed. I guess we now need a warp core to power them."

Submission + - Apple witohut Jobs?

CDPatten writes: The internet is buzzing with speculation that Steve Jobs may step down over reports that he profited $7.5 million in stock options by falsifying an executive board meeting. The financial times has a good overview of the unfolding story.

From the Article:

"Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, was handed 7.5m stock options in 2001 without the required authorization from the company's board of directors, according to people familiar with the matter.

Records that purported to show a full board meeting had taken place to approve Mr Jobs' remuneration, as required by Apple's procedures, were later falsified. These are now among the pieces of evidence being weighed by the Securities and Exchange Commission as it decides whether to pursue a case against the company or any individuals over the affair, according to these people."

Journal Journal: rsync for Windows? 2

I am looking for an rsync client for Windows, any suggestions? This is for family members who I have yet to convert to the Cult of Mac. I know about cwRsync, but I am looking for something more akin to WinSCP which I currently have them using. Some are on flaky DSL connections so a protocol that could resume would be preferable to straight SCP.

So went to the /. front page and saw a new button in the header; FireHose. Is this new, did I miss it? Did I miss dozens of JEs about this?
For those that can't see it, it appears to be a look into the story queue that allows tagging and primitive voting "thumbs up"/"thumbs down". I "printed" a PDF of the page, and here is a scr
