you don't understand chromebooks. they exist to provide a zero-maintenance cloud-only (mostly) device. android isn't that since it has local installs and "native" applications.

You don't understand Chromebooks, or Android. Like Android, Chromebooks run a stripped-down Linux distribution designed for simplicity. If Chrome for Android were worth a crap, and if you had Android boot right into it and didn't give any options to get out of it, then it would be like a Chromebook in every way that mattered; all the rest would be details.

Right, but two reloads of the same webpage might actually deliver you different code, and if you don't run with noscript then that code can be coming from all over the internet, and not just from the site you thought you were visiting, due to the miracle of ad networks — which have been used to deliver malware time and again. Whereas if I run the same program twice on my desktop, it's the same program both times.

Not necessarily. In a recent benchmark, Firefox beat Chrome. But that isn't necessarily also true for the Android versions. Hard to know.

It doesn't actually matter because Chrome for Android is not very good. If it were, then chromebooks wouldn't exist; they'd be Android devices which run Chrome for Android. The poor quality of Chrome for Android is literally the only reason why ChromeOS exists. Unless you think Google wants to maintain two Linux-based operating systems with substantial overlap?

As for remote file transfer, I highly recommend Total Commander because it works in the classic 2-pane file manager style. Put the remote machine in one pane and your Android in the other, and just copy files back and forth. It's great. Other file managers work remotely too, but that's the only 2-pane solution of which I am aware.

Why would I care? Run samba server (it's an app) on your device, and copy files to/from it using your PC, or run any file manager on your device, and copy files to/from your PC using it. My phone's kernel has cifs support and I can use cifsmanager to mount shares on my phone directly, then copy data to them, or whatever. Although, I commonly actually use rsync to move data to and from my phone, because it's fucking rsync.

Your point is wrong, because it is part of what's used to determine what is and what isn't the same species. If you want to argue that the definition of species is outdated and being eroded, that's fine.

A more typical example would be the anti-gun politicians who really don't want any private ownership of firearms at all ... but their own guards are armed.

It's better than that. Dianne Feinstein, the poster child for taking guns away, actually has a concealed carry permit and does or did carry a concealed revolver, while at the same time preaching about how citizens don't need guns for self-defense, especially pistols or assault rifles. It's more personally hypocritical than even you have made it out to be. Causality, indeed.

I'd love to buy one of those tablets. But this does not answer the question.

You should also be aware that RK3066 is still bad at 1080p, so is RK3188. RK3188 has overheating problems at 1080p so far. RK3066 is just bad at it. Also, the GPU offloading is mediocre. Poor XBMC support, for example, so far. But there is at least good format support in the latest rom, supposedly. So the R-Pi is still pretty good at the most important selling features compared to the price-competitive competition, which is to say 1080p and video support. On the other hand, the USB is pure crap which transcends awfulness. On the gripping hand, cheap USB sticks tend to be overheating little pieces of crap.

Back then there wasn't the wealth of common applications in the hands of users, so they were happy to take what they could get. But business was being done on Unix systems and on mainframes and minicomputers and that software very much would not run on the PC.

Yes, the RK3188 trails the competition (Exynos quad, Tegra 3) slightly in GPU performance, but spanks it in every other category but storage performance. Well, beats it in every other category, spanks it in a few. Still Mali 400, but they gave it a 25% clock boost. And meanwhile, the Mali is the only ARM GPU for which there are passable FOSS graphics drivers. If you want some assurance of being able to use the hardware for arbitrary purposes in the future, you should still be opting for a Mali-based solution. Nvidia has made some noises about open-sourcing the drivers for their ARM-related GPUs (in Tegra) which they claim is "doable" in exactly the way that it isn't for their mainstream GPUs; they don't actually name Microsoft but the idea is that they don't have partners in a position to prevent them. We'll see; I'm not holding my breath for that any more than I am for Rockchip to start putting out kernel releases on a reasonable basis. But since Exynos is arguably the least closed of all of the quad-core ARM platforms, if you're not happy with Tegra (and I'm not) then rockchip with mali is all that's left.

I ordered a MK908 for $62, if all goes well I will post the link if it's still active. It was on in4dealz, which is one of those sites that has many sketchy reviews and many good reviews even after you filter out all the obvious astroturf.

You can simply manufacture old stuff the old way. There may be a shortage of machinists, but they aren't nonexistent.
