Depends where you are. The taxi drivers prefer hand guns - easier to conceal. A lot of people would be quite surprised at what Africa is really like if they visited, but then if Americans in general were interested in the world beyond their borders trolling them would be harder. No I don't drive a 2012 Hyundai elantra (considered a fairly cheap vehicle). Instead I ride an elephant to work every morning... :P

People who react in such a dangerous manner are unsuitable to operate a motor vehicle. As I mentioned above, there is a mechanism in place to allow people to pass and it would be an offence by the slower driver not to move out of the way when safe to do so. You can get a fine for that. Further more, what the idiot tailgating doesn't understand is that the correct response which will save both him and you damage is in fact to slow down to increase the gap in front of you until you can allow him to pass. The opposite of what he desires. In effect a tailgater is therefore too stupid to operate a motor vehicle having no understand of cause and effect or stopping distance in emergency situations. I'm afraid there is no positive spin on tailgating possible. It is stupid, counter to the tailgaters interests and goals, quite rightly illegal and dangerous. No excuses or explanations should ever be considered as none are valid.

I often do, when safe, but at times you get boxed in. In that case I slow down to leave more gap in front of me (it is called defensive driving) which just makes the idiot behind me angry. The issue is, most drivers here do not.

I'm doing 130km/h in the normal lane and some genius sits behind me 30cm away? The limit here is 120km/h. This happens on single lane roads as well, and by the way, going to slowly in the passing lane doesn't justify someone else driving in a dangerous manner. Over here(in normal, not stop-go traffic, which is caused by tailgating anyway) if the guy behind you flashes his lights and you are able to move to the left, you are obliged to do so, so he may pass without changing lanes, regardless if you are doing 180km/h or 30km/h. There is no justification here for tailgating. It is stupid, dangerous and often kills people.

I suspect he was reffering to your misuse of "hear, hear!" as "here, here". I don't personally think this should disqualify you from driving a vehicle, but this is slashdot, so he probably does. I am always tempted to reply to "here, here" with "Where? Where?"

Actually I wouldn't mind a sort of instant brick wall system that would let me slam on breaks and have the idiot tailgating me crash without damaging my car. People in South Africa really do not understand following distance, and whenever it rains (often even when it doesn't) this results in lots of sensless death.

Your delivery removes it's force. Why argue at all if it just makes things worse?

They'll pick it up really quickly when they're a bit older. I like this idea. I think when I have kids they'll get to start with a ZX81, and move up when they master it...
